Long before she put on her nearsighted glasses, María Antonieta de las Nieves already had more than a decade of discipline on film and TV sets. She got into the business at just three years old, practicing ballet, and at six she enrolled at the Andrés Soler Institute. In 1957, she made her big-screen debut with a supporting role in Pulgarcito, a job that led right away to the first telenovela produced in Mexico, Senda prohibida.
Her true training ground was the voice-over booth. During the 1960s, she lent her voice to American productions that filled afternoon television across half the continent. She was the Spanish-language voice of Eddie Munster in The Munsters, of Wednesday in The Addams Family, and of little Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz.
Nobody recognized her on the street.
That anonymous work built a precise control of breath and feigned crying. So when Roberto Gómez Bolaños cast her for Los supergenios de la Mesa Cuadrada, he found an actress capable of modulating any vocal register in a single take without losing the comedic timing.
In 1971, the character of La Chilindrina was formally born during the recordings of El Chavo del Ocho. The actress shaped the clumsy walk, the deliberately missing front tooth, and that dry whine that mimicked schoolyard tantrums. The broadcasts dominated Spanish-language television with huge ratings throughout that decade.
The working relationship between the actress and the writer was never free of friction. In 1973, she left the cast to try her luck as a host on Canal 13 with the children's show Pampa Pipiltzin. The venture didn't last long. In 1975, she returned to the vecindad after finding that audiences rejected any attempt to move her away from situation comedy.
The real break came in 1995. That year the character's registrations at the National Copyright Institute expired, and Gómez Bolaños forgot to file the renewal. De las Nieves went to the government offices and registered the name in her favor so she could exploit it directly in circus shows and international tours.
That company blew the group apart for good.
Televisa and the creator responded with lawsuits that canceled spin-off projects and kept the actress off Mexican media for years. The courts ruled in the actress's favor in 2013 after twelve years of litigation in civil courts, confirming her rights to the character.
Beyond the studio sets, she ran a traveling tent show that toured fairs and sports venues from Argentina to the United States. Together with her husband, the announcer Gabriel Fernández, she defended the green dress with the white collar on stage for more than half a century.
In November 2021, Guinness World Records gave her an official certification for the longest career playing the same child character. The organization recognized a record of 48 years and 261 days of continuous performances between June 1971 and March 2020.
And her body paid the price.
Because keeping up the physical stunts past the age of seventy became an unacceptable medical risk. In 2024, she announced her definitive retirement from the stage with performances of the comedy Los huevos de mi madre, written by Fernando Botero. In that production, she took on a dramatic role suited to her real age.
The final performance in Colombia closed the tour with seventy percent of seats sold and a contract that stipulated the permanent packing of the original costumes in a warehouse in Coyoacán.
