Maryse Ouellet wasn't looking to enter the ring when she won the Miss Hawaiian Tropic Canada pageant in 2003. Her path was set on fitness magazine covers and Montreal fashion runways. But WWE's call in 2006 to take part in the Diva Search contest abruptly changed her plans.
She did not win that televised competition. Despite the initial defeat, the company saw in her an innate ability to draw public disapproval, and they sent her to train at the Ohio training centers. There she spent months learning to fall and strike without losing the icy gaze that would define her years later.
In 2008, she won the Divas Championship by defeating Michelle McCool in a match few expected her to win. She held the title for 216 days and set a standard for villainy that American television had not explored with that intensity in the women's division. Because Maryse understood that in pro wrestling, the gesture matters more than the strike.
And the gamble paid off.
Her role as an arrogant, sophisticated blonde connected with an audience that loved to hate her. In 2010, she repeated the feat by winning the championship a second time in an elimination tournament. But the physical toll of constant tours led her to request her release from her contract in 2011 so she could focus on personal projects outside contact sports.
During her first break from the ring, Maryse trained in real estate and launched her own jewelry line. She didn't want to be just another former wrestler waiting for a call to sign autographs. So she leveraged her network of contacts in Los Angeles to diversify her income while managing her personal brand.
She returned to entertainment television in 2016 as the manager of her husband, Mike Mizanin. Her role on Raw and SmackDown was no longer that of a full-time competitor. She acted as a strategic piece to elevate her partner's storylines and bring a layer of realism to the company's plots.
Maryse controlled the scripts and the pacing of her own storyline.
In 2018, she made her definitive leap into executive producing with the premiere of Miz & Mrs on USA Network. This reality show was not a simple documentary about her family life. She oversaw the editing process and episode structure to ensure the final product had the tone of a classic sitcom.
The series drew steady audiences of more than one million viewers per episode in its first seasons. But success did not pull her away from the ring for good. In 2022, she laced up her boots again for a tag team match at the Royal Rumble event, proving her commercial value remained intact after years of competitive inactivity.
Away from the spotlight of WWE, Maryse has built a solid business empire that includes real estate investments in Texas and California. In 2021, she launched her skincare line, Volition Beauty, after spotting a market niche in hydration products for women with demanding lifestyles.
She has never hidden that her priority is the profitability of every move she makes. Her participation in the show Total Divas between 2016 and 2017 taught her how audience metrics work in streaming. That experience was vital when she later negotiated the renewal contracts for her own reality show.
The transition from athlete to producer was completed without big announcements or aggressive marketing campaigns. She simply stopped being a third-party asset and became the owner of her own time and image rights. In 2023, her television appearances became selective and always tied to high-level sponsorship deals.
Her estimated net worth of 2024 exceeds 14 million dollars after she sold several luxury properties in the Detroit area.
