Mathew Horne was born in Nottingham in 1978 and never intended to be the funniest guy in the room. He studied drama at the University of Manchester. There, he began refining a dry acting style that would later contrast with much more theatrical characters. Early on, he appeared in projects such as 28 Days Later and the series Teachers, but his life changed completely when he met James Corden.
In 2007, the premiere of Gavin & Stacey on BBC Three redefined his career. The show went from a small cult project to drawing more than ten million viewers to their TV screens. Horne played Gavin Shipman, an ordinary young man from Essex who falls for a Welsh girl over the phone. His role was that of the straight man, the necessary anchor that let the rest of the cast shine with their eccentricities.
And the gamble paid off.
But massive success often brings exposure that isn't always easy to handle. The chemistry between Horne and Corden was so obvious that the British industry tried to exploit it to the point of exhaustion. In 2009, they presented their own sketch show and starred in a film that did not win over critics.
The film Lesbian Vampire Killers was released in 2009 and marked a negative turning point in his public image. Critics were brutal toward the movie. Audiences started to tire of seeing the pair at every awards ceremony and on every talk show in the United Kingdom. So Horne decided to step away from the media spotlight for a while to focus on quieter, more personal projects.
His professional relationship with Corden cooled noticeably after that period of oversaturation. In 2010, Horne sought refuge on the West End stage, taking part in the play Entertaining Mr Sloane. It was a strategic move to regain the industry's respect as a stage actor and not just as the face of a sitcom.
Audiences have short memories.
In 2012, he joined the cast of Bad Education, playing Fraser, a high school principal desperate for his students' approval. This role allowed him to explore a far more pathetic and ridiculous side than Gavin's. He worked on this production for several seasons and took part in the film version shot in 2015.
From 2016 onward, his career found a comfortable balance between commercial television and niche projects. He joined the series Agatha Raisin, playing Roy Silver, a public relations expert with a very distinctive style. In 2019, he returned to the universe that made him famous with a Christmas special of Gavin & Stacey that broke British TV ratings records.
Television is a business of cycles.
Unlike many of his generation, he did not go for a full-on conquest of Hollywood. He preferred to maintain a solid base in the United Kingdom, working on series such as Catherine Tate's Nan or lending his voice to various animated productions. In 2022, he returned to his role in new episodes of Bad Education, proving that his gift for physical comedy was still intact.
In 2024, the production of Gavin & Stacey's final episode brought together a crew of eighty people in the town of Barry. Filming of those last scenes was scheduled to last three weeks, with a BBC budget that exceeded two million pounds sterling.
