Matthew Fox never wanted to be an actor. He studied Economics at Columbia University and played American football with the plan of ending up on Wall Street. But the camera wanted him more than the balance sheets, and he ended up starring in one of the most-watched shows in television history.
In 1994, he landed the role of Charlie Salinger in Party of Five. It was his first real taste of mass fame in the United States. The series lasted six seasons and gave him the financial cushion he needed to choose his next professional move with care.
And then the island came.
J.J. Abrams was cast to play Jack Shephard in Lost in 2004. The original script had his character dying in the first episode, but the producers changed their minds at the last minute. That decision changed the course of modern television and tied him to an exhausting shoot in Hawaii for six straight years.
Because the show's success was so enormous that Fox went from supporting actor to a global face. He earned close to $225,000 per episode in the final seasons. But the physical and mental toll of leading such a complex ensemble cast took its price by the time production wrapped in 2010.
Fox has always had a reputation for intensity on set. To film In the Mind of a Killer in 2012, he lost nearly twenty kilos and went through daily military-style training. He wanted to completely break away from the image of the good-hearted hero he projected on the small screen, and his physical transformation was extreme for that villain role.
The movie was a flop with both critics and audiences.
But the box office results didn't seem to bother him. In 2015, he appeared in Bone Tomahawk, a cult Western where he shared the screen with Kurt Russell. It was his last major role before he vanished from the Hollywood radar for a long stretch that many saw as an early retirement.
So he moved to Oregon with his family to fly planes and get away from the entertainment industry. For nearly seven years, he didn't accept any scripts or attend promotional events. Rumors spread about his difficult temperament after an incident with a bus driver in 2011 (though the actor always denied the accusations, and the lawsuit was dismissed).
In 2022, he broke his professional silence to star in the miniseries Last Light. He wasn't looking to reclaim the throne of global stardom or return to the red carpets of Los Angeles. He preferred to focus on projects where he could also serve as executive producer, to have full control over the final cut of the scenes.
And the bet paid off on a personal level. The announcement of his role in the series The Assassin in 2024 confirms that his comeback isn't a one-off but a new, more selective chapter. He no longer needs the money from big franchises or seeks the approval of major film studios.
Fox lives in Oregon and holds a commercial pilot's license, which he uses to fly his own six-seat Beechcraft Bonanza G36. His contract for the production of The Assassin includes a technical clause that limits filming days to a maximum of ten hours a day.
