Matthias Schoenaerts is not an actor who seeks the approval of the audience. In 2011, he had to gain thirty kilos of muscle to play Jacky Vanmarsenille in Bullhead. That physical transformation, based on steroids and a brutal diet, nearly cost him his health but firmly put him on the international map.
The actor was born in Antwerp in 1977 and grew up in the shadow of his father, Julien Schoenaerts, one of the most respected figures in Belgian theater. He made his film debut at thirteen with a small role in Daens, an Oscar-nominated film. But early success did not interest him much, and he preferred to spend his teenage years painting graffiti under the pseudonym Zenith.
His physique has always been his main tool.
Schoenaerts has mastered the art of masculine restraint. In 2012, Jacques Audiard chose him to star in Rust and Bone alongside Marion Cotillard. In that production, he played a street fighter who must care for his son while falling in love with a woman who has lost her legs. European critics were won over by his ability to convey violence and tenderness with barely a word.
His move to the United States was not a quest for fame but a logical consequence of his magnetism. In 2014, he shot The Drop alongside Tom Hardy and James Gandolfini. It was one of the final performances of the star of The Sopranos before his death. Schoenaerts played a neighborhood thug with an intensity that made the camera uneasy.
And the gamble paid off.
Unlike other European actors who get typecast as Russian villains, he has known how to choose period projects with real dramatic weight. In 2015, he released Far from the Madding Crowd and The Danish Girl. In the first, he played the shepherd Gabriel Oak, a man whose loyalty drives the story. In the second, he brought the restraint needed to balance the biographical drama of Lili Elbe.
But the American market was not always kind to his choices. For years, he alternated big-budget productions with independent films that went unnoticed by the general public. In 2017, he appeared in Nosotros en la noche to share the screen with Robert Redford and Jane Fonda. It was an exercise in generational respect in which the Belgian actor proved he could hold his own alongside living legends of the industry.
Schoenaerts has never stopped being Zenith. He still paints murals in cities around the world whenever filming schedules allow. This artistic side explains his refusal to walk the red carpet and his heavily guarded private life in Belgium. In 2019, he starred in The Mustang, a film in which a prisoner seeks redemption by training a wild horse. It is perhaps his rawest performance to date.
The streaming industry gave his career a new global boost. In 2020, he joined the cast of The Old Guard alongside Charlize Theron. It was a foray into commercial action cinema that allowed him to fund more personal projects in Europe. In 2022, he shot Amsterdam under David O. Russell's direction, although the film was a box office disaster that grossed barely $31 million against a budget of 80.
Schoenaerts still prefers risk to comfort.
In 2023, he took on the challenge of bringing a legendary character to life in the series Django, a reinterpretation of the classic Western. A year later, in 2024, he premiered the miniseries The Regime alongside Kate Winslet. In this political satire, he played Corporal Herbert Zubak, an unstable soldier who becomes the confidant of an authoritarian chancellor. The HBO production was shot mainly in Vienna's palaces and had an estimated budget of $7 million per episode.
