Charlize Theron arrived in Los Angeles with a one-way ticket and a suitcase heavier than her bank account. A run-in with a teller at a Hollywood Boulevard bank was her first real audition. Agent John Crosby was in line and saw a young woman shouting because they wouldn't let her cash a 500-dollar check.
Crosby gave her his card, and Theron began studying acting to lose her South African accent. She made her debut in 1995 with an uncredited role in a direct-to-video horror sequel. But her real breakthrough was Two Days in the Valley in 1996. There she appeared in a blue velvet suit with a coolness that immediately caught the attention of casting directors.
And the gamble paid off.
She got to work with Al Pacino on The Devil's Advocate in 1997 after months of screen tests. At the time, the industry only saw her as a blonde with an imposing physical presence. Theron, however, sought projects that would move her away from the eye-candy image Hollywood tried to impose on her in the late nineties.
In 2003, she decided that her face was an obstacle to being taken seriously by critics. She gained fifteen kilos and wore dental prosthetics to play serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster. The press became obsessed with her physical transformation, but what mattered was the empty stare she gave the character.
Won the Best Actress Oscar in 2004.
She was the first South African woman to win the statuette. That award gave her the control she needed to launch her own production company that same year, under the name Denver and Delilah Productions. She wanted to choose her own scripts and stop depending on the decisions of the major studios.
In 2005, she shot North Country and received another Oscar nomination for playing a miner who suffers sexual harassment. Not everything went right during that period. The film Æon Flux cost 62 million dollars and was a box-office failure that raised doubts about her ability to lead big action blockbusters.
She spent several years alternating independent dramas with supporting roles in studio films. In 2012, she played the evil queen in Snow White and the Huntsman and earned the same as her male co-star after a tough negotiation. Theron publicly demanded pay equality and secured a 10 million dollar contract for that production.
In 2015, she shot Mad Max: Fury Road in the Namibian desert. She shaved her head and took on a chaotic shoot where the tension with Tom Hardy was constant for months. The film grossed 380 million dollars and returned her to the front lines of mainstream action cinema with a character who had barely any dialogue.
Nobody expected a star of her caliber to throw herself into the mud like that.
She trained for months for the choreography of Atomic Blonde in 2017 and broke two teeth during fight rehearsals. She stayed tied to the big franchises and in 2023 returned to play Cipher in Fast X. Her production company financed The Old Guard for Netflix in 2020, and the sequel was shot in 2022 across Italy and the United Kingdom.
Theron keeps an aggressive business profile and manages more than ten projects at once from her Los Angeles office. In 2019, her annual earnings topped 23 million dollars from film contracts and long-term advertising deals.
