Demetrio Santagà was a plumber and did not have the money to pay for his grandson's singing lessons.
In exchange for local British Columbia musicians letting young Michael take the stage, his grandfather fixed pipes and boilers for free in the clubs. That barter of services was the real foundation of an industry that would later move millions of dollars. The kid did not sing radio pop. He sang songs that were already old when his father was born.
And it worked.
For ten years he toured cruise ships, shopping malls and dive hotels where audiences barely looked up from their plates. In 2000 he sang at the wedding of the daughter of Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. David Foster, the producer who had shaped the sound of Celine Dion and Whitney Houston, was there. Foster didn't want to sign him because he thought the market for classic jazz solo singers was dead.
Foster asked Bublé to raise half a million dollars to finance his own album. He didn't have it. But he managed to gather a small part of it, and the producer accepted the challenge after seeing how the young man commanded the stage with a confidence unusual for a beginner. In 2003 he released Michael Bublé, and the world discovered that nostalgia was a profitable product. The album sold more than four million copies worldwide without any electronic tricks.
His style avoided cheap imitation of Frank Sinatra. He had perfect diction and a phrasing that recalled pre-rock-era singers more than his contemporaries. Bublé understood early that his audience was not looking for the avant-garde but for a refuge.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2005 he released It’s Time. The album included Home, a ballad he co-wrote himself that broke through the purists of the genre. The song reached number one on the adult contemporary charts. He proved he could create original material with the same weight as the classics of Cole Porter.
His career seemed unstoppable until reality hit the brakes hard. In November 2016, the singer announced that his eldest son, Noah, had been diagnosed with liver cancer. The music world vanished for him in an instant. He canceled all of his appearances, tours and recording sessions without giving further explanation.
It was a complete retreat.
He returned in 2018 with the album Love. Critics noticed a change in his voice, something more fragile and less concerned with studio technical perfection. In 2022 he recorded Higher, a project where he collaborated with Paul McCartney and explored sounds that bordered on raw gospel and soul. The album debuted at number one in the United Kingdom, confirming that his fan base was immune to passing trends.
In 2024, he released The Best of Bublé to collect two decades of studio recordings. The selection included unreleased tracks such as Don’t Blame It on Me, recorded in a production that aimed to recapture the sound of the great orchestras of the 1950s. The European tour from that same cycle closed with gross earnings of more than seventy million dollars per leg.
The distribution deal with Warner Records was renewed for an amount the company never made public.
