Luisana Lopilato became part of Argentina's collective imagination before turning twelve. In 1999, Cris Morena cast her in Chiquititas, and that audition changed the course of her childhood. But it was in 2002 that her impact crossed borders with Rebelde Way. The role of Mia Colucci turned her into a mass-export success in markets as different as Israel and Greece.
The series led to worldwide tours and platinum records.
That teen breakout could have been the end of her career, since many broken-down TV stars in Argentina ended up there. She chose otherwise. In 2005, she took on the challenge of playing Paola Argento in the local version of Casados con hijos. That decision was crucial. She swapped melodramatic roles for slapstick, absurd comedy that still airs on repeat on television across the Southern Cone today.
Seven million viewers watched the series finale during its original broadcast.
The move into adult films was neither immediate nor easy. For years, her personal life took up more space in the press than her scripts. In 2011, she married singer Michael Bublé and moved her residence to Canada. But she didn't stop working on selected projects. In 2017, she shot Los que aman, odian (a period drama where she broke away from her sweet image) and a year later took on the role of Manuela Pelari in Gone Girl.
And the gamble paid off.
That film, based on the novel by Florencia Etcheves, launched a very close commercial relationship with the streaming market. In 2020, she starred in La corazonada, the first Netflix original film produced entirely in Argentina. The saga of detective Pipa came to a close in 2022 with the premiere of the third installment, shot in the landscapes of northern Argentina. Viewing data confirmed that her name still carried commercial pull despite changes in consumption habits.
In 2022, she also explored big-budget romantic comedy with Matrimillas.
Lopilato has skillfully managed the power of nostalgia with financial savvy. In 2023, she returned to the Gran Rex theater for the stage adaptation of Casados con hijos. The show broke presale records and forced extra and triple performances for months. Producers confirmed that they sold more than 195,000 tickets in a single summer season in Buenos Aires.
It was the most profitable return to commercial theater in the past decade.
By 2024, the actress was immersed in the shoot of Mensaje en una botella, a production that blends science fiction and romance. She also began physical preparation to play Margarita Di Tullio in the biographical film Pepita la pistolera. The project centers on the life of the most famous woman in the Mar del Plata underworld during the 1980s and 1990s. The shoot for this latest film was planned with a production budget above the national independent film average.
The film Pepita la pistolera has a six-week shooting schedule between Buenos Aires and Mar del Plata.
