For almost three decades, Guillermo Francella was stuck with the label of easy laughs and television vaudeville: the type with a mischievous grin and a curled mustache who smashed Argentine TV ratings, coming close to a 50 percent share of the screen. On newsstands in Buenos Aires he filled the covers, and during summer seasons in Mar del Plata not a single seat was left empty.
Before stepping onto a set, he sold clothes in neighborhood shops and wrote press releases for a construction magazine. His father worked at a bank and taught gym classes at Racing Club de Avellaneda, a soccer passion that his son still brings up in every interview.
His on-screen debut came in 1984 with the telenovela Historia de un trepador, but for years the industry gave him the most mundane supporting roles. He had to rack up light comedies such as De carne somos and Brigada cola before tapping into a vein of wild humor with Poné a Francella in 2001.
Nobody expected that man with the noisy grimace to know how to keep quiet.
In 2008, the phone rang with an unexpected call. Juan José Campanella was looking for Ricardo Darín's office colleague to The Secret in Their Eyes, and he set one non-negotiable condition: he had to shave off his mustache, his physical trademark for more than thirty years. Francella accepted the order, fearing ridicule.
And the gamble paid off. Playing Pablo Sandoval, the drunk yet lucid court clerk who holds forth on passion in a rundown tavern, he wiped out in one stroke the reservations of even the toughest critics. The film won the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film in 2010 and introduced the Buenos Aires actor to European audiences.
In Spain we discovered an actor with a broken gaze and measured diction, capable of holding his own in a scene opposite Darín without resorting to showy theatrics. Gone were the mannerisms of Casados con Hijos, where his character Pepe Argento stretched domestic jokes to the point of absurdity.
The clown had died on paper.
That composure was no passing red carpet whim. In 2008, he had already shot the film Rudo y Cursi in Mexico under the direction of Carlos Cuarón, but it was Pablo Trapero who decided to push him over the edge in 2015 with El clan.
To play Arquímedes Puccio, Francella stripped away every trace of human warmth. He dyed his hair ash white, locked his jaw, and learned to hold a dead stare that unsettled viewers.
More than two and a half million people bought tickets in Argentina to watch the former family-comedy hero bless the meal while a kidnapped man screamed in the basement of the house. Trapero took the Silver Lion for Best Director at the Venice Film Festival, and the industry realized that unease fit his image too.
And the box office responded.
Comedy returned to his schedule later on, but filtered through biting satire. In 2018 he shared the bill with Luis Brandoni in Mi obra maestra, directed by Gastón Duprat, and in 2020 he topped the box office with The Heist of the Century, playing the mastermind behind the heist at the Banco Río in Acassuso.
Television crossed his path again with big-budget productions. In 2022, he began a regular collaboration with the creative duo of Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat to star in the series The Boss. His character, Eliseo Basurto, a relentless building concierge who spies on the owners and manipulates the residents' meetings, carried three seasons of huge buzz between 2022 and 2024.
So maturity brought him a feverish work pace. In 2023, he led the cast of the thriller La extorsión under the direction of Martino Zaidelis, and in 2025 he shot the black comedy Playa de Lobos on Spanish locations, directed by Javier Veiga.
In 2025, he wrapped up an exhausting stretch of prosthetic makeup work for the production Homo Argentum while rehearsing in Buenos Aires the role of Chance in the stage version of Desde el jardín. The production schedule for the fourth season of The Boss set eleven-hour daily shoots in the Belgrano neighborhood of Buenos Aires, with a technical budget fully paid in U.S. dollars.
