Michael Provost was born in 1998 and grew up in an environment far removed from the red carpets of California. He started early. In 2014 he took part in The Best of Me, and from that moment on he understood that his looks would open doors but also typecast him in very specific roles.
Television gave him massive exposure through Netflix. In 2018, he played Brick Armstrong in the series Insatiable. The project was surrounded by controversy because of its subject matter, but it helped him prove he could carry the weight of a production with millions of viewers.
And the gamble paid off.
But Provost didn't want to be just the square-jawed jock of teen comedies. In 2021, he appeared in Fear Street Part Two: 1978, where he explored slasher horror with a '70s aesthetic that suited his classic look.
Hollywood doesn't hand out anything for free.
His real shift in style didn't come from a superhero blockbuster. In 2023, Alexander Payne cast him in the ensemble of The Holdovers. Playing Curtis Cook allowed him to work in a restrained register, far from the usual trappings of streaming platforms.
Working under Payne means entering a different professional league. The film received five Oscar nominations and put Provost on the radar of directors looking for actors able to convey vulnerability without needing big monologues.
It hasn't been a straight path.
Before moving on to auteur projects, he had to go through minor roles in series such as Shameless or Lucifer. On those shoots he learned the discipline of the supporting actor who must make the most of every second on screen, because he knows the final cut is often merciless toward names that don't top the poster.
In 2024 he joined Kevin Costner's project titled Horizon: An American Saga. It is an epic western that revives large-format filmmaking and demands grueling physical preparation to shoot on natural locations under changing weather conditions.
For this project, the actor committed to shooting four feature-length films.
Filming for this saga was divided into several production phases located in the state of Utah.
