Michael James Hucknall was in the front row of the Lesser Free Trade Hall that June of 1976. He was sixteen and watched the Sex Pistols spit on the stage while he searched for a way out of his working-class life in Manchester. He wasn't looking for soul at that point. He wanted the chaos of his first band, the Frantic Elevators, with which he recorded tracks that barely got heard outside his neighborhood.
But the voice was still there.
In 1985 he founded Simply Red and released Picture Book. This was the moment the world discovered that the red-haired boy raised by his father after his mother walked out could sing as if he had been born in Detroit. The success of his version of If You Don’t Know Me by Now in 1989 gave him total creative control over his career.
Hucknall understood early on that his image was his best marketing tool. He managed his band like a one-man company where musicians came and went according to his melodic needs. That executive coolness allowed him to survive the changing trends of the eighties while other groups of his generation disappeared into irrelevance.
And the gamble paid off.
In 1991 he released Stars. That album was more than a sales hit. It became the best-selling album in the United Kingdom for two consecutive years, a figure that exceeded 3.4 million copies in the UK alone. Hucknall wrote about politics and heartbreak with a narrative structure reminiscent of classic Hollywood cinema.
But fame brought constant media harassment over his private life. The English tabloids became obsessed with his romantic conquests and his hedonistic lifestyle. He responded by buying a property in Sicily to produce his own wine, Il Cantante, getting away from the noise of London whenever he wasn't on tour.
His relationship with the industry was always strained. In 2003 he decided to break away from the major record labels and start his own label, simplyred.com. He wanted 100 percent of the profits and absolute control over his original recordings. It was a risky move that many considered commercial suicide in the middle of the digital piracy crisis.
The market was at his feet.
In 2010 he announced that Simply Red was disbanding after a farewell world tour. Hucknall wanted to focus on his family and on solo projects that would explore pure blues. He recorded American Soul in 2012, but the project lacked the commercial power of his main brand. Nostalgia is a powerful force in music, and he knew how to read the shift in trends.
He returned with the band in 2015 to celebrate the group's thirtieth anniversary. There were no grand speeches or requests for forgiveness. They simply filled stadiums again because his voice remained intact despite the passing decades. In 2019, he released Blue Eyed Soul, an album recorded at British Grove Studios in London that aimed to revive the sound of 1970s funk.
In 2023, he released the album Time. The record debuted directly at number 9 on the UK Official Charts. The album was recorded in London with Andy Wright as the main collaborator, and the distribution deal with Warner Music was signed under a shared ownership license.
