Mikey Madison

From the Stables to the Movie Set

Mikey Madison never wanted to be an actress. During her teenage years in Los Angeles, her life revolved around horses and equestrian competitions. But the pull of her hometown eventually won out when she decided to go with a friend to an audition and discovered that the emotional control needed to tame an animal also helped her play complex characters.

In 2016, she landed the role of Max Fox in the series Better Things. She worked under the direction of Pamela Adlon for five seasons and learned there that silence communicates more than a scream. The series was shot between 2016 and 2022 and served as a paid acting school where Madison grew in front of the camera without the pressures of major studio productions.

No one expected a professional rider to end up in Cannes.

Her training was unconventional because she did not go through the traditional drama schools of California. Instead, she spent time observing crew members and learning how light affected her facial expressions. That technical curiosity allowed her to develop a dry, direct style that caught the attention of the industry's most important casting directors.

Tarantino's fire and the terror of Woodsboro

Quentin Tarantino saw her and decided she had to burn. In 2019, Madison played Sadie in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and her role was reduced to a violent final sequence that demanded weeks of physical choreography. She didn't need many lines of dialogue to stand out among a cast full of stars, because her physical presence was enough to convey the madness of the Manson family.

It was the moment the industry stopped seeing her as just another teen.

But her definitive leap into mainstream genre film came in 2022 with the release of Scream. In this fifth installment of the franchise, she played Amber Freeman and had to deal with the absolute secrecy of a script that concealed the killer's identity even from the actors themselves. Filming took place in Wilmington, North Carolina, under extreme security to prevent leaks online.

In that production, Madison showed she could carry the weight of a million-dollar franchise without losing her naturalness. Despite the horror film trappings, she kept a realistic approach to her performance. Audiences responded well, and the movie grossed more than $140 million at the global box office.

Breaking through under Sean Baker

Then Sean Baker's call came.

The director of The Florida Project wrote the script for his next film with her specifically in mind. In 2024, Anora was released, and international critics were won over by a performance that steers clear of the usual clichés about sex work. Madison plays a young woman from Brooklyn who gets caught up in a web of money and power after marrying the son of a Russian oligarch.

The film won the Palme d'Or at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival by unanimous jury decision. To prepare for the role of Madison, she spent months studying the accent of New York's less touristy neighborhoods and hanging out in nightclubs to understand the work dynamics of her character. Baker shot the film on 35mm to give it an organic texture that highlighted the actors' skin and expressions.

Madison prefers shoots that demand real physical wear and tear. On Anora, she performed nearly all of her stunt scenes herself (including fights and falls), because she believes the body doesn't lie when it's put under pressure. This work ethic has placed her in a privileged position within American independent cinema of the 2020s.

Anora was made on a tight production budget, and the final cut runs exactly 139 minutes.
