Mina Tominaga started working before the age of ten. Her debut came in 1971 with a small role in the TV drama Chichi to Ko. The girl wasn't seeking fame, yet she ended up voicing characters who defined Japanese animation in the 1980s.
And the change was permanent.
In 1985, she voiced Uzumiya in Touch. The role put her on the map with Tokyo's major studios. Her range let her move from childlike fragility to the energy of a teenager without the viewer ever noticing the technical seam.
The arrival of Mobile Police Patlabor in 1988 confirmed her standing in the industry. She played Noa Izumi for years. Noa wasn't the typical protagonist of giant robot shows, because she had an almost obsessive devotion to her police unit.
Tominaga gave her characters a human nuance that avoided melodrama.
Many fans of the series remember her ability to shout combat orders and, a second later, speak tenderly to a robot as if it were a pet. In 1989, the Patlabor film brought in millions at the Japanese box office. Voice actors' pay did not rise in the same proportion.
In 2002, she took on the most difficult challenge of her professional career. She replaced Kazue Takahashi in the role of Katsuo Isono in Sazae-san. The series is a national institution in Japan, and changing a voice after decades on air always triggers resistance from the audience.
Mina Tominaga overcame the initial pressure and blended into the character until making it her own.
But she didn't limit herself to children's series. In 1996, she voiced Yahiko Myojin in Rurouni Kenshin. It was a male role, aggressive and full of nuances of honor, that demanded a different vocal effort.
She still records weekly episodes.
The Japanese voice acting industry is fiercely competitive. Tominaga has outlasted three generations of actresses. In 2023, she marked more than five decades behind the microphone.
The records of the Japan Actors Association show she has taken part in more than 150 productions since her beginnings. Her contract with Sazae-san requires near-total availability for Fuji TV. Mina Tominaga earns a fee per recording session according to the rates set by the actors' union.
