Mitsuru Miyamoto was born in Sakai on September 8, 1958. His entry into the entertainment industry was no casting accident but the result of years of classical training at the prestigious Gekidan Subaru theater company. There he learned that silence communicates as much as a scream.
He brought that lesson to dubbing in 1985.
In his early years, he balanced stage work with supporting roles in series that few people remember today. But in 1999, his voice found the perfect vessel in The Big O. Playing Roger Smith required complete restraint, far from the excess typical of late-century anime.
That series of giant robots and noir aesthetics highlighted his ability to sound sophisticated without coming across as pompous.
Miyamoto specialized in men who keep secrets behind a veneer of courtesy. In 2016, he took on the role of Ougai Mori in Bungou Stray Dogs, and the result was a surgical performance. The coldness of his tone during moments of senseless violence defined the character of the Port Mafia.
His voice doesn't need to rise in volume to intimidate.
This talent for suspense also showed in 2016 with Boku dake ga Inai Machi. His work as Gaku Yashiro is a study in emotional manipulation through the rhythm of words. Because Miyamoto knows that a badly placed pause can ruin a plot twist.
In 2017, he took part in Kekkai Sensen & Beyond, bringing Steven A. Starphase to life. In this project, he refined a relaxed, authoritative register that moved away from his darkest villains. So by the end of that decade, he was already the go-to name when a director was looking for a character of superior intellect.
Outside of anime, his career is just as extensive. He is the regular voice of actors such as Brad Pitt, Adrien Brody or Edward Norton in the Japanese market. In 1995, he dubbed Pitt in Se7en and kept that connection across nearly the entire filmography of the American actor.
Dubbing movie stars requires a different technique than animation. The rhythm is set by the original actor, and Miyamoto has to fit his breathing into someone else's lungs. In 2019, he repeated this process with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood under considerable technical pressure.
He only follows his instincts when the dubbing director allows it.
In 2022, he took part in the production of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, bringing Quilge Opie to life. It was a return to theatrical villains, but with the refined elegance that defines him. In 2024, he kept his presence in the industry alive with the release of the film Kingdom 4: Daishogun no Kikan, where he played Sho Bun Kun.
Miyamoto works on more than ten projects a year, including series, video games and foreign films.
His contract with the Gekidan Subaru agency remains in effect after four decades of uninterrupted professional work. In 2025, he completed the recording sessions for the sequel to the Bungou Stray Dogs franchise without changing his studio working method one bit.
