Naomi Scott isn't the typical young star who burned out from media overexposure. Born in London in 1993, she learned to project her voice in the choir at Bridge Church under her parents' watchful eye. That religious upbringing gave her a musical foundation that later became her best tool in California casting calls.
In 2011, she landed a role in Terra Nova. The series had the backing of Steven Spielberg and a budget of ten million dollars per episode. It looked like the ticket to mainstream stardom, but Fox canceled the show after just one season due to excessive production costs.
That blow was hard.
But Scott returned to the British market and waited for her chance in less ambitious projects. In 2017, she was chosen to play the Pink Ranger in the film relaunch of Power Rangers. The movie grossed 142 million dollars worldwide and, although it didn't spawn a franchise, it helped major studios put her name on their list of priorities.
Disney came calling again in 2019 for the live-action version of Aladdin. The studio was looking for someone who could sing live, and Scott won over Guy Ritchie during camera tests. The film passed the one billion dollar box office mark, and the song Speechless became a digital sales phenomenon.
That same year came the first major box office setback with the release of Charlie's Angels. Critics were brutal about Elizabeth Banks's direction, and audiences ignored the film in theaters around the world. Despite the media buzz, the movie barely recouped its marketing costs, with a worldwide box office of 73 million dollars.
Sometimes a name isn't enough.
Scott then decided to diversify her interests beyond acting alone. Together with her husband, Jordan Spence, she founded the production company Newhouse to manage her own projects and keep control over her image rights. In 2022, she starred in the miniseries Anatomy of a Scandal for Netflix, proving she could handle adult dramas far from the glitz of fairy-tale princesses.
Her biggest change of pace came in 2024 with the shoot for Smile 2. Playing a pop star haunted by a supernatural entity demanded a level of physical exhaustion Scott had not experienced in her previous roles. Director Parker Finn wanted raw intensity that would move the actress away from the sweet image she built during her Disney Channel years.
And the gamble paid off.
Scott now balances her film shoots with managing her independent music career. Rather than signing with a major label, she prefers to release her work under her own imprint to avoid the pressures of the traditional music industry. She still splits her time between London and Los Angeles, depending on the contract requirements her production company signs.
The final budget for Smile 2 reached 28 million dollars before its international distribution.
