At sixteen, Natalia Oreiro boarded a ship in Montevideo with a cheap suitcase and the blind conviction that she would not return defeated. For months she moved from one run-down boarding house to another while standing in endless lines at television auditions, where aspiring actors were turned away by the dozen.

Her first income came from the advertising world, after shooting more than thirty commercials across Latin America. But her real breakthrough into scripted drama came by channeling that street-smart charm into Inconquistable corazón and the comedy 90 60 90 Models.

And the camera fell in love with her.

From Río de la Plata Family Lunches to Moscow Madness

In 1998, she hit the big time with Muñeca brava. She played Milagros, a orphaned girl who played soccer wearing her cap backward and stood up to the snobbish upper class of Buenos Aires. The show was broadcast in more than eighty countries and sparked an unprecedented frenzy in Eastern Europe.

In Russia, teenage girls learned Spanish by ear so they could decipher the lyrics of her songs on bootleg cassette tapes. She filled icy stadiums in Siberia, sang before crowds in the Kremlin, and ended up receiving Russian citizenship by formal decree in 2021. The Russian phenomenon defied every logic of the traditional market.

That same year, 1998, she made her big-screen debut opposite Guillermo Francella in Un argentino en New York. The comedy drew 1.6 million moviegoers in Argentina and proved that her popularity went far beyond the small screen.

Nobody saw such a reaction coming.

The Demolition of the Light Star

In 2003, she made her first major career move by accepting a supporting role in Cleopatra, directed by Eduardo Mignogna. Sharing the screen with Norma Aleandro and Héctor Alterio pushed her to shed every TV habit and find a restrained, bitter tone.

Many producers thought it was just a passing whim.

Benjamín Ávila's call to star in Infancia clandestina in 2012 confirmed that her artistic choices were heading in a different direction. She stepped into the shoes of Charo, a mother who joins the armed underground during Argentina's last military dictatorship. The film premiered at the Directors' Fortnight in Cannes and opened the doors to independent auteur cinema for her.

The risk paid off.

A year later, she earned applause again on the Costa Azul with Wakolda, directed by Lucía Puenzo. Her performance in German and Spanish opposite Àlex Brendemühl, in a plot about Josef Mengele's escape to Patagonia, earned her her second of her three Cóndor de Plata awards for Best Actress.

Documentary Rigor and Borrowed Bodies

For a decade she pursued the biographical rights to cumbia singer Gilda. She spent years persuading the artist's son to bring Gilda, no me arrepiento de este amor to the screen, which premiered in 2016 with nearly one million viewers in Argentine theaters.

That documentary discipline reached its peak in 2022 with the series Santa Evita. To play Eva Perón in her final weeks of agony, she underwent severe weight loss and spent months studying the political leader's speeches to recreate a voice worn down by the terminal progression of cancer.

Between 2022 and 2025, she alternated the political thriller Iosi, el espía arrepentido with the comedy Casi muerta, directed by Fernán Mirás, the family film Campamento con mamá, and the prison drama The Woman in the Line.

During the filming of the morgue scenes for Santa Evita, she spent four hours a day under prosthetic makeup, lying on a metal slab refrigerated to ten degrees so the studio lights wouldn't melt the adhesive for the latex facial appliances.
