At eighteen, he sold clothes in a store in Avellaneda and drew construction blueprints, never suspecting he would end up making a living in front of the camera. His arrival at the Buenos Aires studios came almost by chance, after he studied acting with the master Lito Cruz. Before long, TV networks discovered his telegenic appeal and tied him to afternoon melodramas.
In 2000, he made his big-screen debut with Plata quemada, directed by Marcelo Piñeyro. That thriller about an armed heist of an armored truck in 1965 allowed him to step away from romantic stereotypes and play a criminal tormented by guilt.
Nobody expected him to break the mold so quickly.
In 2003 he starred in Resistiré alongside Celeste Cid, and the audience went wild. The final episode drew more than four million viewers in front of their TVs, a figure that overloaded cable TV ratings systems and forced the finale to be screened in a Buenos Aires theater.
But the actor did not settle into the comfort of million-dollar contracts. In 2005, he crossed the Atlantic to shoot El método, the Spanish-Argentine co-production adapted from Jordi Galceran's play. His performance as Ricardo, a ruthless candidate for an executive position, earned him a Goya nomination for Best New Actor in 2006.
That same year, he premiered Crónica de una fuga at the Cannes Film Festival, directed by Adrián Caetano. The film depicted the torture at the Mansión Seré clandestine detention center during the 1976 military dictatorship, and confirmed that his name could fill commercial theaters while also sustaining auteur cinema.
In 2006, he returned to free-to-air television with Montecristo. The production incorporated the search for grandchildren taken by the military, linking the sentimental soap opera to the trials for crimes against humanity.
He founded the production company El Árbol in 2010 together with his colleague Martín Seefeld. The company's first project was El elegido in 2011, where he took on the dual role of lead actor and financial supervisor. The series won six Martín Fierro awards in its first season.
Learning to produce hurts your wallet.
Launching his own projects in an inflationary economy wears down any business partnership. After the series La Leona in 2016, disagreements over the production company's direction led to the amicable split of its founding partners.
Since 2006, he has devoted much of his time to the Argentine Society of Performers' Management (SAGAI), where he serves as treasurer. He fought in courts and ministry offices to make broadcasters and hotels pay performers royalties for retransmissions.
That union activism also came with an explicit political stance in favor of the Kirchner governments. The decision earned him fierce critics in the media and closed the doors of certain private casts to him, but Echarri chose to face the conflict openly.
In 2016 he starred in the action thriller Al final del túnel alongside Leonardo Sbaraglia and Clara Lago. The film required building a fifty-meter underground tunnel on a soundstage, with real water leaks.
In 2020, he traveled to the jungle of Misiones to shoot El silencio del cazador under the direction of Martín Desalvo. The feature film competed at the Málaga Film Festival in 2020, where Spanish critics praised the raw intensity of his physical confrontation with a corrupt park ranger.
So he took refuge in commercial theater. In 2021 he joined the cast of the play Art, sharing the stage with Fernán Mirás and Mike Amigorena under the joint direction of Ricardo Darín and Germán Palacios. The production ran for more than four hundred performances in Buenos Aires theaters and continued until 2024.
The audiovisual market changed its technical rules.
During 2024 and 2025, reforms at the National Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts (INCAA) froze the usual credit lines for local film. In 2025, the average cost of financing an independent feature film in Argentina fell below three hundred thousand dollars, a figure that forced mid-sized production companies to rely on foreign distributors for ninety percent of the deals needed to cover post-production costs.
