The Arrival and the First Round

Natalia Verbeke arrived in Madrid from Buenos Aires in 1986. She was eleven years old and had an accent she had to smooth out through endless repetition at the Real Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático. She wasn't chasing instant fame, but the camera spotted her early.

In 1998, she shot Un buen novio alongside Fernando Guillén Cuervo. It was her first real contact with the Spanish film industry. There were no slow transitions or apprenticeship in the shadows. That debut earned her the Max Factor Award for being the most interesting new face of the year.

And the industry took notice.

Her career took off rapidly before she turned twenty-five. In 1999 she took part in Nadie conoce a nadie and soon after shot El hijo de la novia in Argentina. That 2001 film earned an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. This was when her name started to come up in the offices of major producers.

The Musical and Television Phenomenon

In 2002, she starred in The Other Side of the Bed. The film was a risky experiment because it mixed farce comedy with choreographed musical numbers by people who didn't know how to dance. The result was box office earnings of over 12 million euros in Spain.

That film broke the mold of national comedy. But Verbeke never got stuck in one genre. In 2003, she premiered Días de fútbol and showed she could handle dry comedy's rhythm with the same precision she brought to drama.

Television came knocking with long-term contracts. In 2009, she moved to the fictional town of Lastres to shoot Doctor Mateo. The series stayed on air until 2011 and created a tourist phenomenon in the Asturian village that still lingers today. She was paid per episode a sum that placed her at the very top of national fiction.

But massive success did not pull her away from the stage.

In 2013, she took to the stage to perform in El tipo de la tumba de al lado. Theater helped her shake off the bad habits that the speed of television can sometimes create. After all, Natalia Verbeke has always preferred the discipline of rehearsal to the improvisation of a fast-paced shoot.

Technical Maturity and Streaming Projects

In 2016, she played a journalist in El Caso. Crónica de sucesos. The series recreated 1960s Spain with impeccable visual craftsmanship. It was a niche project that did better in prestige than with a mass audience. Still, it helped her prove she could carry complex characters.

The arrival of streaming platforms changed her schedule. In 2022, she premiered the first season of Todos mienten, directed by Pau Freixas. In this series, she plays Ana, a character caught in a web of secrets in an upscale housing development. The series was renewed for a second season, which premiered in 2024.

Her work method is more analytical now. Before filming, she reads the script looking for the cracks in the character. In 2021, she took part in Ana Tramel. El juego, where she explored the world of gambling addiction from a raw and unflinching perspective.

The pace hasn't slowed down.

In 2024, she starred in the series Una vida menos en Canarias for prime time on Antena 3. Filming took place in locations in Madrid and Tenerife, with a crew of more than eighty people per shooting day.
