Ernesto Alterio arrived in Madrid at the age of four, just as the Triple A was threatening his father's life in Buenos Aires. He grew up backstage at independent theaters and dubbing studios, but before stepping onto a set he tried his luck studying Biology and classical piano. That didn't last long. Cristina Rota's acting school in Lavapiés ended up taking over his afternoons alongside a group of aspiring actors who would eventually found the Animalario theater company.
By the late nineties he landed his first substantial roles in television and film. With Los años bárbaros (1998), directed by Fernando Colomo, he earned a Goya nomination for Best New Actor after playing a political prisoner on the run.
And Spanish comedy shifted gears.
Emilio Martínez-Lázaro cast him to lead the ensemble of El otro lado de la cama in 2002. No one on set trusted a vaudeville comedy in which ordinary thirty-somethings sang songs by Tequila or Coque Malla, slightly off-key. Yet the film packed theaters with more than 2.7 million viewers in Spain. His role as Javier established a brand of comic neurosis, halfway between pettiness and tenderness, that dominated mainstream box office that decade.
The following year he pulled off the same move with Días de fútbol (2003), directed by David Serrano. He earned another Academy Award nomination, this time as a lead, playing a drab everyman who tries to climb out of ruin by forming a neighborhood team with his lifelong friends.
So he decided to break out of that box before the industry typecast him completely.
In 2006 he traveled to Buenos Aires to film Vientos de agua, the ambitious series directed by Juan José Campanella about two waves of migration between Asturias and Argentina. He shared a role with his father, Héctor Alterio, playing the young miner Andrés Chesa. The production cost ten million euros, and Telecinco moved it to the late-night slot because of its weak ratings on free-to-air television.
Nobody saw that stumble on the small screen coming.
Real recognition came with far rougher roles, though. In 2011 he co-starred in Infancia clandestina, directed by Benjamín Ávila and set in the final throes of Argentina's last military dictatorship. His portrayal of Uncle Beto earned him the Cóndor de Plata Award for Best Supporting Actor from Buenos Aires film critics.
Back on the Spanish circuit, he shot El método (2005) under Marcelo Piñeyro and La sombra de la ley (2018), in which Dani de la Torre cast him as a corrupt inspector addicted to opiates in violent Barcelona in 1921.
Álex de la Iglesia brought his darkest edge to Perfect Strangers (2017), a dinner party confined to four walls that grossed 20.9 million euros at the box office. Five years later they reunited for El cuarto pasajero (2022), shot inside vehicles and on the back roads of the Iberian Peninsula.
The trick worked flawlessly.
On television he built a run of supporting roles with moral complexity. He played the fearsome Commander Salvador Osuna Nava in the first installment of Narcos: Mexico (2018) and Colonel Carlos Moori Koenig in the miniseries Santa Evita (2022). In 2025 he took on the role of head of the Royal Household in the monarchy satire Su Majestad and returned to his old character Javier in Todos los lados de la cama, directed by Samantha López Speranza.
In 2026 he completed filming on the feature Karateka under director Aritz Moreno, a production with a budget of 3.8 million euros and official ICAA subsidies.
