At twelve years old, Quim Gutiérrez already knew what it meant to have a whole country watching his braces during prime time. He played Martí in Poblenou, the TV3 soap opera that brought Catalonia to a standstill in 1994, but he decided that acting wasn't a serious job for a kid. He stepped away from sets and enrolled in Humanities at Pompeu Fabra University, because he preferred analyzing classic texts to signing autographs on school folders.
That technical retreat didn't last long.
In early 2000, he returned to regional television with El cor de la ciutat, where he racked up hundreds of hours of fast-paced filming and gritty, hands-on craft. But the real breakthrough of his career didn't happen on a television set. It happened at a casting call where a first-time director was looking for a guy who could carry the guilt of a broken family without shedding a single extra tear.
Daniel Sánchez Arévalo cast him in AzulOscuroCasiNegro in 2006. Gutiérrez played Jorge, a janitor caught between a disabled father, a brother in prison, and a business degree that couldn't get him out of the neighborhood. That feature film debut earned him the Goya Award for Best New Actor in 2007, launching one of the most profitable creative partnerships in Spanish cinema.
With Sánchez Arévalo, he honed a very specific style: the flustered guy who drowns in a glass of water but keeps a pathetic sort of dignity. He explored it in depth in Primos in 2011, filmed on the coast of Cantabria, and pushed it to the limit in La gran familia española in 2013, where his character dealt with a wedding on the same day the national team was playing the final of a World Cup.
In 3 bodas de más, directed by Javier Ruiz Caldera in 2013, he served as the comic counterpoint to Inma Cuesta, while in Anacleto: Secret Agent in 2015 he had to hang from wires to shoot pure action sequences alongside Imanol Arias. His character Adolfo required weeks of physical training and stunt scenes performed without doubles, an athletic side that casting directors had completely overlooked until then.
Tangled comedies had started to wear him down.
Looking for darker edges, he shot Ventajas de viajar en tren in 2019 under the direction of Aritz Moreno, playing an unhinged, clinical role that surprised his usual audience. He then decided to try his luck in French cinema with titles like Madeleine Collins in 2021 alongside Virginie Efira and La isla roja in 2023, directed by Robin Campillo. To shoot the latter in Madagascar, he had to master full dialogue in French without giving away his native accent.
That same year 2023 starred in Burning Body for Netflix, stepping into the shoes of police officer Albert López during the reconstruction of a crime for the Guardia Urbana. The series logged more than 26 million hours of viewing in its first week and showed a dark, physical, restrained side that definitively moved him away from comedy.
In 2024, he returned to the big screen with Al otro barrio, and in 2025 he led very different projects, such as Los aitas by Borja Cobeaga and Un funeral de locos by Manuel Gómez Pereira. By 2026, he had finished shooting Haciendo amigos by David Marqués and signed on for the melodrama Amarga Navidad under the direction of Pedro Almodóvar.
During the filming of Los aitas in Bilbao, production had to halt the shooting schedule for two full days due to a technical failure in the lighting trucks, raising the final budget by 42,000 euros.
