Bigas Luna passed over more than three thousand hopefuls before crossing paths with a 22-year-old waitress from Madrid who had just returned from washing dishes in London. She was 2005 when Verónica Fernández de Echegaray won that audition with sheer nerve and a carefully rehearsed street accent. The director renamed her Verónica Echegui and put her at the center of Yo soy la Juani.
The commercial impact was immediate.
In 2006 the box office responded strongly to a divisive yet overwhelming film that earned her first Goya nomination for Best New Actress. That working-class character, with oversized gold hoop earrings and a loud tracksuit, threatened to typecast her from the very first minute. But the Madrid-born actress had other plans for her career.
To shake off her image as a teen phenomenon, she chose a tougher path. In 2008, she starred in El patio de mi cárcel under director Belén Macías, playing a drug-addicted inmate who starts a theater group behind bars. She earned her second Goya nomination at just twenty-five, holding her own against established actresses without backing down.
In 2011 she traveled to the slums of Nepal to shoot Katmandú, un espejo en el cielo under the direction of Icíar Bollaín. It was a demanding shoot in extreme conditions that required her to live with local families and lose visible weight. That role earned her the Gaudí Award and her third Academy nomination.
And then came the leap into mainstream comedy.
Far from settling into tragic roles, she took on parts in La gran familia española in 2013 and No culpes al karma de lo que te pasa por gilipollas in 2016. She saw humor as a technical discipline that demands as much mathematical precision as drama. In 2020 she delivered a comic performance in the musical Explota Explota, winning the Feroz Award for Best Supporting Actress for a performance set to the rhythm of Raffaella Carrà.
Echegui was not content to wait for the phone to ring with other people's offers. During the 2020 lockdown she wrote the script for her first project as a director, inspired by a sexist episode she experienced as a teenager during local festivities. She shot the film in the Ávila municipality of Casavieja during the winter of that same year.
The result was Tótem loba, a 23-minute short film that skipped the obvious moral to focus on the implicit violence of certain rural customs.
The film swept the festival circuit.
In 2022 she took home the Goya for Best Live Action Short Film in Valencia, joining a small list of Spanish actresses honored for directing. That win did not slow her work in front of the camera on television. She appeared in the series Intimidad for Netflix in 2022 and in the adaptation of Los pacientes del doctor García for Televisión Española in 2023. She alternated auteur projects with productions for global platforms without diluting her acting style.
In 2024, she starred in two films with very different tones: María Ripoll's comedy Yo no soy esa and the tech thriller Justicia artificial, directed by Simón Casal. In the latter, she played judge Carmen Costa, a restrained, understated role that explores the ethical risks of software used for judicial arbitration.
The dark comedy A muerte, directed by Dani de la Orden, hit screens in 2025. She shared the bill with Joan Amargós, playing a woman who faces an unplanned pregnancy while caring for a friend with a terminal illness. Her death in August 2025 left the police series Ciudad de sombras unreleased; filming in Barcelona had wrapped months earlier with a production budget of over four million euros.
