Tokyo asphalt and the stigma of the new face

Nathalie Kelley landed in Los Angeles at barely twenty years old with a return ticket she never used. In 2006, the industry was looking for fresh faces to revitalize franchises that were showing signs of fatigue. She won the role of Neela in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift after a single successful audition.

That movie grossed more than 158 million dollars worldwide. But the romantic-interest label in a car franchise nearly ended before it began. Her phone stopped ringing as often as expected after the release.

It wasn't all speed.

She spent several years shooting pilots that never saw the light of day. In 2011, she appeared in Body of Proof, an ABC procedural drama in which she played Dani Alvarez for ten episodes. It was her first real experience with long-running, technically demanding American television.

The CW Contract and the Quiet Exit Out the Back Door

In 2016, she joined the cast of The Vampire Diaries to bring Sybil to life. Playing an ancient villain gave her a visibility that mainstream film had denied her after her debut in street racing movies. Teen audiences embraced her immediately, and her name was back on the most sought-after casting lists in television.

Then came Dynasty in 2017. She was the first Cristal Flores in the reboot of the famous 1980s soap opera. But her departure from the series after the first season caused a media stir that she herself later settled in various interviews.

Kelley admitted she wasn't comfortable with the work pace or the scripts' material. So the production decided to let her go and look for a replacement for the character.

The firing was a much-needed relief.

In 2020, she starred in The Baker and the Beauty. The ABC series barely lasted one season on air. Despite good reviews from the specialized press, the network canceled the project due to a lack of mass audience in the late-night slot.

Ground activism and new screens

For 2022, she was part of the narrative experiment The Seven Faces of Jane. In this movie, eight different directors shot independent segments about the same lead. It was a stylistic exercise that definitively pulled her away from Hollywood's usual commercial circuits.

Off screen, Kelley devotes much of her time to soil regeneration and environmental activism. In 2023, she actively got involved in promoting documentaries on sustainable agriculture and the rights of Indigenous peoples.

Because her interest in the camera now has a strong political and social edge.

In 2024, her schedule focused on producing content tied to biodiversity protection in Peru. The shoot for her latest independent project in Peru had a budget of less than two million dollars.
