Neslihan Atagül did not wait for luck to knock on her door in a humble neighborhood of Istanbul. At just thirteen years old, she picked up the phone and called a talent agency herself to ask for a chance. Her film debut came in 2006 with İlk Aşk, where a supporting role earned her first award as a rising young talent.
And the plan worked.
But real recognition from specialized critics didn't come until 2012. In the film Araf, she played a young woman working at a gas station in the middle of nowhere, a raw role that moved her away from the polished look of commercial television series. That performance earned her the Best Actress award at the Moscow International Film Festival and other international festivals before she turned twenty.
Television was the arena where her face became profitable for Turkey's major production companies. While filming Fatih Harbiye in 2013, she met Kadir Doğulu, who would later become her husband and business partner in ventures. The chemistry between them went beyond the screen and helped make the series a massive export hit across Latin America and Europe.
In 2015, she landed the project that changed her salary scale and her media exposure. The series Kara Sevda became the first Turkish production to win an International Emmy in 2017, and much of that success rested on her performance as Nihan. Viewership figures exceeded expectations in more than 110 countries, and the actress went from a local figure to an exportable brand.
Because success isn't always comfortable.
Despite her international fame, Atagül has always kept a careful distance from the Turkish gossip press. She prefers to talk about her cosmetics brand partnerships or her interest in literature rather than her private life. Her public image is therefore protected by a strictly professional approach that few in her generation manage to maintain with such composure.
The work pace on Istanbul sets, with days that sometimes exceed sixteen hours, eventually took a toll on her health. In January 2021, she had to abruptly leave the set of the series Sefirin Kızı due to leaky gut syndrome. This forced medical leave led the writers to change the direction of the storyline and replace her with another actress midway through the season.
His body said enough.
After a recovery period, she returned to the screen in 2022 with Gecenin Ucunda, a production in which she also served as executive producer alongside her husband through their company Alim Yapım. In 2023, she starred for a streaming platform in the film Ah Belinda, a remake of an 1980s Turkish cinema classic in which she played an actress trapped in a parallel reality.
In July 2024, the actress officially confirmed her first pregnancy through her social media channels. The news caused a logistical pause in her professional commitments ahead of the close of the fiscal year. Production company Alim Yapım posted net profits of several million lira before the pause taken by its main founder.
