Olivia Cooke was turned away from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. She was 18 years old and had a determination that didn't fit the academic mold in London. In 2012, she landed her first role in the miniseries Blackout and soon decided her place was on the other side of the Atlantic.
She didn't speak with an American accent, but she convinced the producers of Bates Motel in 2013 to cast her as Emma Decody. So she moved to Vancouver without knowing anyone and with a multi-year contract in hand.
She spent four years there hooked up to a fictional oxygen tank.
That stint on American television gave her the experience needed to understand the rhythm of industrial shoots. But Cooke didn't want to get stuck in the role of the sweet, sick girl. In 2014, she starred in The Quiet Ones, a horror film from the legendary Hammer studio that allowed her to explore darker territory.
In 2015, she starred in Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. The film won at Sundance, and critics began to take notice of the young actress from Oldham who had really shaved her head for the role.
And the gamble paid off.
Steven Spielberg called her for Ready Player One in 2018. It was her first big-budget production and an intensive crash course in green-screen work. But she preferred the grit of independent projects, where the script matters more than the visual effects.
That's why she accepted Sound of Metal in 2019. She learned to play guitar and to scream in a metal band to bring Lou to life. The film ended up competing at the Oscars, and she proved she didn't need gimmicks to carry a high-voltage dramatic story. Her ability to convey tension without speaking became her best tool as an actor.
The casting of House of the Dragon in 2022 changed her global level of exposure. Playing Alicent Hightower meant entering a machine that often crushes performers under the weight of social media hate. She decided to step away from Twitter before the premiere to protect her mental health.
In 2022, she also appeared in Slow Horses. She worked alongside Gary Oldman in a spy series where glamour is nowhere to be found. The contrast between the queen of Westeros and the demoted agent at Slough House defines her approach to choosing roles.
She isn't after the audience's sympathy, but the truth of the character.
In 2023, she filmed The Good Mother alongside Hilary Swank. It was a dark thriller exploring grief and addiction in rural America. The film had a limited release, but it helped Cooke keep exploring roles of women broken by their circumstances.
Production on the third season of House of the Dragon was scheduled to begin in early 2025. The original contract tied the actress to the franchise for several additional stages. A-list lead salaries for these HBO productions typically hover around 300,000 dollars per episode.
