Olivia Washington

The weight of the family name and the New York school

Olivia Washington didn't take the easy route. She studied at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and honed her craft in theater before stepping onto a professional film set. She knows her last name casts a long shadow, but she chose to ignore the media noise and focus on supporting roles with real dramatic weight.

Her training was her shield.

In 2013 she got her first break in film with a small role in Lee Daniels' The Butler. There were no big headlines or marketing campaigns focused on her. That experience taught her about the dead time on film sets and the importance of restraint in front of the camera.

And the gamble paid off.

From Television to Auteur Drama

Television gave her the rhythm she needed to toughen up. In 2016 she played an FBI agent on the series Mr. Robot, where she learned to handle tension in dense dialogue scenes. But it was on stage that she really found her own voice, playing Hero in Much Ado About Nothing for the Public Theater.

She prefers silence to the easy applause of the tabloid press.

In 2021 she appeared in The Little Things, sharing the screen with three Oscar winners. That same year she worked under the direction of Joel Coen in The Tragedy of Macbeth. In this black-and-white adaptation, she played Macduff's daughter and proved she can handle Shakespeare's verse without missing a beat.

Maturity in Independent Film

The year 2022 marked a big step up with the film Breaking. In this dramatic thriller based on a true story, she played Cassandra Easley, and critics praised her ability to convey anguish without resorting to screaming. She worked alongside John Boyega on a production that demanded pinpoint emotional precision.

In 2023, she joined the cast of the series I’m a Virgo, created by Boots Riley. This foray into social surrealism let her explore less conventional registers, far from the pure realism of her early work. Her casting in The Piano Lesson in 2024 confirms her connection to August Wilson's legacy.

Her family name stopped being the main story.

Production on this latest film took place in Atlanta with an estimated budget of $20 million.
