Park Ki-woong became famous in 2006 for a neck movement. In a SKY mobile phone ad, the actor performed a strange, almost robotic dance that the public dubbed the "tooth dance." Those few seconds on television brought him instant popularity in South Korea, but they also nearly typecast him forever as a commercial face with no dramatic depth.

But Park had other plans.

In 2005, Park Ki-woong made his feature film debut in the horror movie Kadam in a small role. After the impact of the 2006 announcement, the actor sought projects that would break with his image as a likable, somewhat quirky guy. And he succeeded, thanks to dark characters and a gaze that Korean critics often describe as unsettling. In 2009, he played a young man with autism in the drama Slingshot and received praise for avoiding the usual clichés of this type of role.

The Villain No One Expected

In 2012, he landed the project that defined his career. In the series Bridal Mask, he played Kimura Shunji, a Japanese teacher who is transformed into a ruthless police officer during the colonial occupation. The character was highly complex. He had to go from absolute kindness to the most extreme cruelty within just a few episodes. Park lost weight and barely slept during filming to maintain the physical tension the script demanded.

And the audience responded.

His portrayal of Shunji was so powerful that many viewers admitted feeling a mix of hatred and pity for the villain. In 2012, he won the Excellence Award at the KBS Drama Awards. But the pressure of that role was so great that the actor later admitted it took him years to shake off the character's emotional weight once filming wrapped.

In 2013, he appeared in Secretly, Greatly alongside Kim Soo-hyun. He played a North Korean spy disguised as an aspiring rock star. The film was a massive box office hit in South Korea, selling nearly seven million tickets. It was his last major project before taking a mandatory break from his career.

In May 2014, Park Ki-woong enlisted in mandatory military service to fulfill his duty as a citizen. He served as an auxiliary police officer for twenty-one months. After his discharge in February 2016, he immediately returned to work with the series Monster on MBC.

Maturity Between Brushes and Scripts

Painting is not a temporary refuge.

Unlike other actors who use art as a marketing tool, Park Ki-woong is a professional painter with formal academic training. He studied Visual Design at Daejin University. In 2021, he won the K-Art Star Award, and his paintings often sell out before the exhibitions open to the general public. His style focuses on expressionist portraits with vibrant colors that contrast with the restraint he usually shows in interviews.

In 2021, he signed an exclusive contract with Mountain Movement to manage his career as a visual artist. He balances this side with strict acting work. In 2023, he played Jang Do-jin in the series Pandora: Beneath the Paradise directed by Choi Young-hoon. His character was the heir to a business conglomerate caught up in a plot of corruption and revenge.

In 2023, he also took part in the production of My Man Is Cupid for Prime Video. Filming for this fantasy series wrapped up after several months of work on closed sets in Seoul. Since returning from military service, Park Ki-woong has maintained a steady production pace, averaging one TV project per year.
