Peta Wilson was waiting tables in Los Angeles when luck decided to change sides. It was 1996, and USA Network was desperately looking for a face to bring Luc Besson's work to the small screen.
More than two hundred actresses auditioned before her. None convinced the producers, who were looking for an impossible mix of fragility and raw physical strength. Wilson showed up at five foot eleven with a stare that intimidated casting directors.
She landed the role of a lifetime with barely any prior experience in the American industry.
In 1997, La Femme Nikita premiered. The series was not only a ratings hit in North America but also sold its rights to half the world (Spain included), where the leather-and-ice aesthetic of its lead character struck a deep chord. Wilson didn't play a typical spy. Her character was a woman trapped in a dark government organization that forced her to kill against her will.
That Canadian production demanded sixteen-hour shooting days. The actress performed most of her own stunts (including choreographed fights and chases), which ultimately took a physical toll over five seasons. But the effort was worth it.
Television made her a millionaire before she turned thirty.
When the series ended in 2001, many expected to see her name on movie marquees across Los Angeles. However, Wilson decided she didn't want to play the game of constant fame. She took a necessary break to step away from the media pressure she had endured in Toronto.
In 2003, she accepted the role of Mina Harker in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. It was a troubled production, notorious for the clashes between Sean Connery and director Stephen Norrington. The movie grossed 179 million dollars worldwide, but the reviews were scathing. That experience convinced the actress once and for all that big studio films were not her natural habitat.
And then came the voluntary silence.
In the years that followed, her appearances were highly selective. She took part in Superman Returns in 2006 in a brief role (barely a cameo as Bobbie-Faye) that left fans wanting more. Wilson always preferred projects where she had control or that let her explore other sides of her career beyond acting.
In 2012, she launched her own lingerie line, called Wylie Wilson. Designing and making garments became her main occupation for almost a decade. As a result, the film industry took a back seat while she built a company from scratch based in Venice, California.
But the acting bug never fully goes away. Wilson returned to Australia to work on local productions that offered her characters with more dramatic weight and less physical demands than her early work. In 2012, she shot the movie Liberator and shortly after appeared in the documentary Dutch Harp.
She wasn't looking to return to the front lines.
Her most solid return to television fiction came in 2022 with the series Troppo. In this Australian crime drama, she plays Eve, a character that radiates the maturity of an actress who no longer needs to prove anything to anyone. Filming took place in the tropical areas of Queensland under extreme weather conditions.
In 2022, the series Troppo was confirmed for a second season produced by AGC Television.
