Cold Calm Around the Animatronics

Piper Rubio sat down with the Blumhouse producers with the calm of someone who had already been through five previous auditions. In 2023, she stepped onto the set of Five Nights at Freddy's to bring Abby Schmidt to life. She was ten years old and had to share the frame with giant machines weighing hundreds of pounds.

And the gamble paid off.

Because acting with practical effects demands a discipline that many adults lack. Rubio was not intimidated by the cables or by the noise of the internal motors inside the puppets. Her work in that film is what ultimately convinced critics that her presence was no accident of casting.

Before the massive success of video game adaptations, she had already worked on productions of a very different kind. In 2020, she took part in the TV movie Holly & Ivy. That was a much more sheltered and sweeter setting (a Christmas family drama), but it helped casting directors in Los Angeles start noting her name in the schedules for big-budget projects.

Her ability to keep a straight face in tense scenes is what sets her apart from other child actors of her generation.

The Year of Full Deployment

The schedule in 2023 was the one that truly tested her physical and mental endurance. Besides the horror phenomenon, Rubio appeared in the comedy series Unstable, produced by Netflix. There she shared scenes with Rob Lowe and proved she could handle the fast pace of comedic dialogue without missing a beat.

Nobody expected a ten-year-old girl to hold her own against a 660-pound robot.

But the road to success was not always a straight line up. Also in 2023, she was part of the cast of Crater, an ambitious Disney+ science fiction project. The film cost millions of dollars and told a survival story on the Moon. It was pulled from the platform just seven weeks after its premiere as part of the company's tax-saving strategy.

That studio financial move erased much of her work from that year from public access. Rubio quickly learned that in this industry, talent doesn't always guarantee that a work will stay on the server.

The contract for the sequel to the horror franchise was signed under strict confidentiality clauses that protected the plot details.

She has also made her mark in voice acting. She voiced the lead character in the animated series Pretzel and the Puppies (which debuted in 2022). This work helped her maintain steady income while live-action shoots came to a halt during the Hollywood union strikes.

Production on the second installment of her biggest hit was scheduled to begin in New Orleans during the fourth quarter of 2024.
