Rebecca Spence didn't need to leave Chicago to convince Michael Mann that she was the actress they were looking for. In 2009, she played Doris Rogers in Public Enemies and shared the screen with Johnny Depp. It was a brief role, but it helped establish her face in the commercial industry after years of stage training.
Before making it to film, she spent thousands of hours in her city's theaters. She worked at Steppenwolf and the Goodman Theatre, where she learned that acting depends not on the size of the shot but on restraint.
The industry was never his priority.
She preferred to build a solid career from the edges of Hollywood. In 2011, she appeared in Contagion under the direction of Steven Soderbergh. It was another small role but strategic for her resume.
Spence understands that supporting characters carry the weight of great stories. That's why she has specialized in roles for women with an inner complexity that's hard to decipher.
The move to the small screen was no accident. In 2014, she joined the cast of Crisis and soon after appeared in Empire. But she found her true calling in productions with a rawer, more gritty aesthetic.
In 2019, she shot The Red Line for CBS. She played Jen Sullivan in a drama that explored racial tensions following a police shooting. The series lasted only one season.
Everything changed at rehearsals.
That ability to convey authority led her to join Fargo in 2020. In the fourth season of Noah Hawley's series, she played Adele Weff. It was a technical job in which accent and physical posture defined the character.
In 2021, she was part of the revival of a horror icon with Candyman. Nia DaCosta's film grossed 77 million dollars worldwide. Spence played the protagonist's mother in a scene that connected the past with the present of the story.
Her connection to critically acclaimed hits remained strong in the years that followed. In 2022, she appeared in the first season of The Bear. The series became a global phenomenon for its frenetic portrayal of professional kitchens.
Spence played Natalie Berzatto in flashbacks and key scenes of the family drama.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2024, she joined the cast of Dark Matter for Apple TV+. This science fiction series, based on Blake Crouch's novel, allowed her to explore psychological suspense.
Her contract for this project included temporary exclusivity clauses during the filming months in Illinois. Filming of the first season wrapped with an estimated budget of 60 million dollars for its total production.
