The transformation of the pop star

Rhatha Phongam walked the red carpet at Cannes in 2013 with a composure that caught the European press off guard. She had been a teen pop celebrity in Thailand, but Nicolas Winding Refn turned her into Mai, the owner of a fight club in Only God Forgives. That night she shared the screen with Ryan Gosling, and the world discovered that behind the stage name Yayaying was an actress capable of holding a gaze into the deepest void.

She already knew what massive success was before she turned twenty.

Her career took off in the Thai music industry in 1999 with a self-titled album that landed her on the Bangkok sales charts. It was the era of precision choreography and bubblegum pop sound. But the legacy of her mother, comedian Noi Phongam, weighed on her more than the microphone did. So she decided to break away from the youthful idol image and pursue roles that demanded a physical maturity her country rarely gave singers of her generation.

In 2012, she accepted the role of Jan-Dara in the erotic film Jan Dara the Beginning. It was a risky bet given the film's highly sexual content. Local critics were harsh on her. But that exposure is exactly what caught the attention of international casting directors looking for Asian faces with a stage presence that didn't need long dialogue to convey authority.

Breaking out beyond Thailand's borders

Filming Only God Forgives in 2013 was a cultural shock to her way of working. Refn asked her not to rehearse and to let herself be carried away by the suffocating atmosphere of the Bangkok shoot. The result was a raw performance that opened the doors of Hollywood and Europe for her without her having to move permanently to Los Angeles.

That shoot lasted only a few weeks but changed her schedule forever.

In 2014, she took part in the live-action adaptation of Lupin III, playing Miss V. It was a big-budget Japanese production that let her explore commercial action cinema. Two years later, in 2016, she shared the screen with Jason Statham and Jessica Alba in Mechanic: Resurrection. In this production she played Renee and showed she could fit into the machinery of a major American action blockbuster without losing her identity.

But the Thai market remained his main base of operations. He alternated these forays abroad with local TV series such as Raeng Ngao in 2012 or The Cupids Series in 2017. Because Rhatha Phongam has always understood that economic stability in the Asian industry lies in free-to-air television, not just in European film festivals.

Technical maturity and the streaming phenomenon

In 2021, she lent her voice to the Thai dub of the Disney film Raya and the Last Dragon. It was no minor job. She played Namaari, and that connected her with a much younger audience who didn't remember her years as a pop singer at the start of the century. That same year she took part in the series The Comments, where she addressed social issues tied to online harassment and beauty pressure in Asia.

The streaming industry changed its work priorities.

During 2023, she focused on suspense and horror productions, a genre that is highly profitable in Southeast Asia. She appeared in the film Tee Yod, which became one of the biggest box office hits in Thailand that year. In 2024, she returned for the sequel, Tee Yod 2, confirming that her name can draw audiences into cinemas at a time when digital platforms dominate the market.

Her most recent major international milestone came in 2024 with the filming of the third season of The White Lotus. The HBO series chose Thailand as its main setting, and Phongam joined the cast for the season set to premiere in 2025. It is the most lucrative contract of her recent career and once again puts her in front of a global audience of millions of viewers. Filming took place at locations in Koh Samui and Phuket under strict confidentiality measures and a budget per episode exceeding $10 million.
