The Endurance of the Night Buses

Riho Yoshioka spent months sleeping on regular buses between Kyoto and Tokyo because she couldn't afford a bullet train ticket or a hotel. She held four part-time jobs to pay for acting classes while agencies kept rejecting her profile again and again. In 2013, she made her film debut in a tiny role, but her name didn't start to get noticed until public television rescued her from obscurity.

In 2015, she took part in the morning drama Asa ga Kita. That NHK series gave her the visibility she needed to stop waiting tables and focus on scripts. But Japanese audiences still saw her as a friendly face without much depth.

And the gamble paid off.

In 2017, she played Alice in the series Quartet, and everything changed for her. Her character was a manipulative, cold woman with an unsettling gaze that broke with the innocent image the industry had assigned her. That performance earned her the Best Supporting Actress award at the Television Drama Academy Awards and made directors see her in a new light.

Yoshioka then decided she didn't want to be just a pretty face in instant noodle ads.

The method of physical exhaustion

To shoot Blind Witness in 2019, the actress underwent a grueling training regimen. She spent months living with visually impaired people and learning to move with guide dogs in order to play a blind woman who witnesses a crime. Critics stressed that her work avoided the usual tics of the genre to focus on raw, physical acting.

But her interest in creative processes goes beyond standing in front of the camera. In 2022, she starred in Anime Supremacy!, a film that dissects the hierarchy and extreme pressure within Japan's animation industry. For this role, she spent weeks studying how production studios in Tokyo actually operate.

Sometimes silence says more than dialogue.

In 2023, she took part in the movie See Hear Love, where she again explored the limits of the senses in a love story shaped by the male lead's loss of sight. Yoshioka prefers characters who go through situations of emotional isolation because they let her use her training in traditional Japanese calligraphy to refine the precision of her movements.

The Foray into Rural Horror

In 2022, she joined the cast of Gannibal, one of Disney+’s major bets on Japanese original content. In this psychological horror series, she plays Mashiro Kudo, the wife of a police officer posted to a village where cannibalism is suspected. Filming took place in hard-to-reach mountain areas and under very harsh weather conditions.

In 2024, she reprised the same role for the show's second season. Producers praised Yoshioka's ability to film high-tension scenes for twelve hours straight without losing focus. But she prefers to downplay her effort, often saying the key lies in the discipline she learned during her college theater years in Kyoto.

In 2024, she also joined the cast of The Yin Yang Master 0, a big-budget historical fantasy blockbuster directed by Shimako Sato. The project required her to work with massive green screens and digital effects, a style far removed from the naturalism she usually seeks in her independent work.

In April 2024, the actress ended her representation contract with the A-Team agency after the company went bankrupt and moved to the Flamme agency.
