Rina Hidaka started working before turning ten. This is not a biographical exaggeration or a marketing gimmick. In Japan, the child actor market can chew up talent, but she avoided being forgotten by moving into voice dubbing before her voice had fully developed.
In 2008, she landed her first major role in the anime Michiko to Hatchin. She was fourteen and had an acting ability that many adults in the industry take decades to refine. It was at that point that she decided her career would not follow conventional on-camera work.
And the gamble paid off.
Before she turned twenty, she already had a list of credits that included high-profile commercial projects. In 2008, she played Last Order in A Certain Magical Index (a character that requires a rhythmic, almost robotic vocal delivery) and proved she could handle complex technical registers without losing the natural flow of dialogue.
But the real turning point in her career came in 2012. With the release of Sword Art Online and her role as Silica, the anime industry found in her the perfect voice for young, vulnerable characters. This stage of her working life was marked by a crushing workload that required her to record several series at the same time every week.
It's a matter of endurance.
For a long time, Hidaka was the go-to choice for any character who needed to sound sweet or small. In 2011 she voiced Airi Kashii in Ro-Kyu-Bu!, and in 2013 she took part in Galilei Donna. These roles performed well at the box office and in merchandise sales, but they risked exhausting her artistic range through sheer repetition.
In 2019, she broke out of that pattern with her performance as Milim Nava in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. Despite the character's appearance, the actress brought out shades of aggression and an overflowing energy that was far removed from the fragility of her earlier roles. That was the year casting directors began to see her as a viable choice for pure action roles.
In 2023, the actress took a key administrative step by leaving her former agency to join StarCrew. Moves like this in the Japanese industry usually reflect a push for greater control over projects and better management of image rights. It wasn't a sudden change, as she had been laying the groundwork for a more mature stage of her career for some time.
Her role as Sarina Tendōji in Oshi no Ko in 2023 proved that her voice can carry deep dramatic weight. In this project Hidaka had to convey the melancholy of a character marked by illness (a register that demands an emotional restraint you won't find in standard voice-acting manuals).
In 2024, the actress kept up a schedule of more than five simultaneous projects per quarter, including her work on Shangri-La Frontier. Production data for that year places her recording volume among the highest in her pay bracket within the voice actors' union.
