Rob Mayes is not your typical Los Angeles lab product. Before stepping onto a set, he spent some time at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis. That military discipline, which lasted only briefly in 2003, gave him a work ethic he would later apply to fourteen-hour shooting days. He left his military career to pursue an idea that many in his hometown of Ohio considered absurd.
The Navy was not for him.
In 2012, he starred in John Dies at the End, which was a major turning point for his career. Don Coscarelli put him at the center of a psychedelic horror film that quickly became an instant cult classic. Mayes played an ordinary guy caught up in an interdimensional drug plot, and his face soon began appearing at genre festivals around the world.
But independent film doesn't pay the bills consistently. So he jumped to national television with projects that featured a much cleaner, more commercial image. In 2013 he joined the cast of The Client List and soon after landed on Mistresses, playing Marc Nickleby for several seasons.
Country was her escape route.
While recording hit series in 2014, he spent his nights writing songs on an acoustic guitar. He wasn't chasing the easy applause of an actor who wants to be a singer. In 2019 he released his first EP, titled Closer, and showed that his roots were closer to Nashville than Hollywood. Music allowed him to control the narrative without depending on a casting director's approval.
In 2020, he released the album Songs From the Basement. It was a raw record recorded without much technical polish, and it worked as a personal diary of his years in the media spotlight. Mayes has always maintained that songwriting is a selfish process, since it only seeks to satisfy his own need to tell everyday stories.
And the gamble paid off.
Many actors get stuck in the loop of holiday movies and procedural dramas. Mayes went along with that game for years. In 2019 he filmed The Road Home for Christmas, and in 2023 he starred in Sweet on You for the Hallmark network. These are paycheck jobs he executes with enviable technical precision, but they are a far cry from his beginnings in auteur cinema.
Despite the comfort of those roles, he sought out projects with more edge. In 2021 he took part in The Desperate Hour alongside Naomi Watts. The shoot took place in a forest in Ontario under difficult weather conditions and on a tight budget that left little room for retakes. It was a test of physical endurance that reminded him why he had chosen to leave the stability of the Navy years earlier.
In 2024 he focused on independent production with the feature film The Neon Highway. The movie was shot mainly on location in Columbus and Nashville to preserve the authenticity of its musical storyline. The final post-production budget ended up 12% over the original plan due to problems with sound licensing.
