Roxanne McKee didn't need years as an extra for the camera to notice her. In 2005, she landed on the set of Hollyoaks after getting through a casting process with thousands of hopefuls. For three years she played Louise Summers in one of the most-watched daily dramas in the UK.
That job brought her massive visibility but also typecast her in a very specific image. She won several popularity awards based on her physical appearance between 2007 and 2008. But she was looking for a way into projects with more dramatic weight.
The American market didn't take long to call.
In 2011 she got the chance to join Game of Thrones. She played Doreah (Daenerys Targaryen's handmaiden) across eleven episodes spread over the first two seasons. Her exit from the series was dark and final. That death in a vault in Qarth let her break away from British television for good.
After her time at HBO, she decided her path lay in action. In 2014, she shot Hercules: The Legend Begins under the direction of Renny Harlin. She played Queen Alcmena in a production aiming to capitalize on epic adventure cinema. Critics were harsh on the film, but McKee used the shoot to learn how to move around large visual effects sets.
That same year she signed on for Dominion. On this Syfy series she brought Claire Riesen to life for two seasons, until 2015. The role demanded a mix of political coldness and weapons handling that ultimately defined her professional profile in the United States. Because Roxanne McKee has always worked best when the script lets her get her face dirty.
It was a bet on physical risk.
In 2017 she joined the series Strike Back to play Natalie Reynolds. The military training before filming was real and grueling. She traveled to Jordan and Hungary to shoot combat scenes, where she did without stunt doubles for most of her scenes. Producers praised her ability to memorize complex fight choreography in record time.
Starting in 2019, she began choosing smaller projects with lead roles. She starred in Inside Man: Most Wanted as an FBI hostage negotiator. It's a straightforward, no-frills style of filmmaking that works very well on digital platforms around the world.
In 2023 she returned to horror with The Amityville Curse. The film was shot entirely in Canada and revives one of the most exploited franchises in haunted house cinema. McKee plays a woman who must confront a traumatic past while dealing with paranormal phenomena in a classic narrative structure.
Then came the historical drama.
In 2024, she premiered The Last Front. It is a war drama set during World War I in which she shares the lead with Iain Glen. The story centers on a Belgian village devastated by the conflict, and McKee's role provides the emotional weight needed in a pure survival plot.
The Last Front was shot mainly on location in Belgium with a budget of 15 million euros.
