Sandra Oh turned down a full scholarship in journalism to enroll at the National Theatre School of Canada in Montreal. Her parents, Korean immigrants with brilliant academic backgrounds, did not understand why their daughter preferred the stage to a prestigious career. But she already knew that acting was her only logical path.
And the gamble paid off.
In 1994 she starred in the TV movie The Diary of Evelyn Lau after beating out more than a thousand hopefuls in the casting process. Her performance as a young woman surviving on the streets of Vancouver earned her a nomination for a Gemini Award. That same year she shot Double Happiness and landed her first leading role in Canadian independent film.
American industry soon came calling. Between 1996 and 2002, she was part of the cast of the comedy Arliss on HBO. That job gave her the experience she needed to understand how cable television worked before the medium exploded on a massive scale. But her big break would come with a white coat and a script from Shonda Rhimes.
In 2005 she accepted the role of Cristina Yang in Grey’s Anatomy. The character was not designed to be the emotional center of the show, but Oh turned her into the driving force of the fictional hospital. Her technical demands were so high that she often argued over dialogue with the writers to keep her character from slipping into cheap sentimentality.
Ambition was never a problem.
For ten seasons, she played a surgeon who put her career ahead of motherhood or marriage. It was a risky creative decision that audiences embraced thanks to the measured coolness of her performance. In 2014, she decided to leave the series because she felt she had already explored every corner of Yang's psyche.
Many actors fade away after leaving a hit series with a massive audience. Oh chose to return to the theater and take on small projects to polish her public image. But in 2018, she received the script for Killing Eve, and her career took a different direction. At first, she read the script looking for the villain's role, because she didn't believe Hollywood would offer her the chance to play the heroine.
Because Oh no longer wanted to play the lead's best friend.
Her role as Eve Polastri marked a shift in the industry's hierarchy. In 2019, she became the first woman of Asian descent to host the Golden Globes. She won the award for Best Actress that same night. The series' success was built on the strange chemistry with Jodie Comer and a tone that blended espionage with dark comedy.
In 2021, she produced and starred in The Chair for Netflix. The series explored generational tensions at an American university in crisis. Oh was involved in the executive production to ensure that her character's cultural nuances were authentic and not mere decoration in the script.
Her voice work has also been steady over the past decade. In 2022, she voiced the mother in the animated film Turning Red. The Pixar project brought in 201 million dollars in its direct release on digital platforms and in select theaters. The actress sought out projects that explored family heritage without falling into the usual clichés of the immigration drama.
In 2024, she took part in the miniseries The Sympathizer, directed by Park Chan-wook. Filming took place in various locations in Thailand and Los Angeles. Sandra Oh has earned twelve Emmy nominations over the course of her career, but has yet to take home the golden statuette in any of the major categories.
