Sasa Handa didn't need endless dialogue for the international industry to take notice of her. Her face went global in 2021 thanks to Drive My Car, Ryusuke Hamaguchi's film that went on to win the Oscar for Best International Feature Film. For that shoot, she played an actress who rehearsed in sign language (a script decision that forced Handa to learn an entirely new language from scratch in just a few months).
That performance was an exercise in pure restraint. Hamaguchi's camera searches for truth in silences, and Handa gave it exactly that. And so a young actress with little prior experience in major productions ended up walking the red carpet in Cannes in front of the press from around the world.
It marked the start of a career built on silence.
After the impact of her international awards, the Japanese industry began to see in her a profile capable of carrying complex psychological tension. In 2022, she joined the cast of Gannibal, a horror and suspense series produced for Disney+ that explored cannibalism in a remote village in the mountains of Japan. There she brought to life Kanako Mashiro (a role that demanded constant fragility laced with a lurking suspicion).
But the show's success didn't push her to accept just any commercial project. She chose carefully. In 2023, she joined the cast of The Days, the Netflix production that chronicled the Fukushima nuclear disasters with surgical precision. Handa played one of the plant workers and brought a human perspective to a disaster that is usually told only through statistics and engineering jargon.
And the gamble paid off.
That same 2023 saw the release of Ichiko, a film directed by Akihiro Toda that premiered at the Busan International Film Festival. In this story, Handa immersed herself in the life of a woman who disappears right after receiving a marriage proposal. Critics noted that her on-screen presence avoided the excesses of traditional Japanese melodrama in favor of a dry realism.
Despite her youth, she has shown she prefers auteur cinema to big action franchises. So it's no surprise to see her move from social drama to the darkest suspense without missing a beat. In 2024, she shot Cinderella of June under the direction of Tatsuya Eguchi, a project that explored the social pressures facing young people in contemporary Japan.
She isn't chasing quick fame or fashion magazine covers. Her approach to acting is built on observation and a physical preparation that often goes unnoticed by the average viewer. For her, acting is more about listening than talking.
In 2024, the film Cinderella of June wrapped its international distribution with sales in more than fifteen countries. Handa was paid a flat fee per shooting day with no additional box office percentages.
