Serena Williams understood before anyone else on the pro circuit that a racket only buys relevance for fifteen years. Hollywood, by contrast, pays forever.

When Will Smith agreed to play her father on the big screen, Serena and her sister Venus set a firm contract condition: they would not put their names in the credits as executive producers until they had seen the final cut. They wanted to check in a private screening whether the film respected the family story or ended up being a mere flattering brochure.

And the gamble paid off perfectly.

The commercial release of King Richard in 2021 earned six Oscar nominations and put the athlete in the offices where big-budget film financing is really decided in Los Angeles.

The Cameo as a Pop Artifact

In 2015, she appeared in the sci-fi comedy Pixels alongside Adam Sandler. It was a lighthearted studio diversion with no major box-office impact, but in the mystery sequel Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, released in 2022, director Rian Johnson gave her one of the most carefully calculated cameos in the film.

Serena appeared on a virtual training screen inside the private gym of an absurd billionaire, waiting bored while holding a copy of the novel Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon.

She barely lasted twenty seconds on screen.

But that absurd detail revealed her sharp instincts for managing her own public image. Serena did not accept the role of untouchable sports star. She preferred to poke fun at the eccentricities of tech fortunes by charging a fee for doing absolutely nothing.

So film studio offers began arriving at her table without sports agents as middlemen.

The business behind Compton's courts

In April 2023, she formally made her move into executive producing by founding 926 Productions. The name was a direct nod to her birthday, September 26, 1981, and the company launched with a first-look deal with Amazon Studios to develop fiction and nonfiction projects with guaranteed budgets.

To run daily operations, she hired Caroline Currier, a former executive at the production company Grand Electric. The initial directive was to scrap any complacent self-improvement script in favor of stories with real friction.

Her first independent project was the documentary feature Copa 71, screened at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2023. The film revisited the women's soccer tournament held at Estadio Azteca in 1971, a sold-out competition that international federations deliberately tried to erase from the official record books.

Nobody wanted to put the money on the table.

Williams financed the digital restoration of 16 mm negatives that had been stored in rusted cans in London and Mexico City. The final footage was sold for international distribution in less than a week of market screenings.

Footage control and bounced checks

In July 2024, ESPN premiered the documentary series In the Arena: Serena Williams, directed by Gotham Chopra. Far from the flattering hagiographies typical of streaming platforms, the edit relentlessly dissected her loss in the 2018 New York final to Naomi Osaka.

Williams personally oversaw the distribution contracts with a law firm specializing in syndicated broadcast rights. The tennis court is behind her, but her absolute control over every frame remains the same.

In 2024, the operating accounts of her production company recorded an initial investment of eleven million dollars in intellectual property development for fiction projects scheduled for theaters before 2030.

Trivia about Serena Williams

Things you probably didn't know about Serena Williams

She learned French, among other reasons, because she wanted to win Roland Garros and give her victory speech in that language.
For a time she was described as a low-key "punk rocker": she listened to Green Day, Bad Religion and Rancid, and even learned to play guitar.
In 2005, she starred alongside her sister Venus in the reality show "Venus and Serena: For Real," which focused on their lives off the court.
With Venus, she won Olympic gold in doubles at three different Games, something no other tennis pair has achieved in history.
The Williams sisters were the first pair to complete a career doubles Grand Slam and, in addition, a career Golden Slam in that discipline.
She is the only tennis player, man or woman, to have won three of the four Grand Slam tournaments at least six times.
In 2009, she became the first woman to surpass six million dollars in prize money in a single season; in 2013, she was also the first to top twelve million.
She met Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit, when he unexpectedly sat down at the next table during a brunch in Rome in 2015.
She has maintained a close friendship with Meghan Markle since they met at a Super Bowl party in Miami in 2010; Serena later attended her wedding and helped organize her New York welcome party after the birth of her son.

Quotes by Serena Williams

  • We say booty. I'm not quite sure about 'posterior'. I'll try to keep that in the back of my mind. 'What are you doing?' 'I'm shaking my posterior.'
