Park Chan-wook doesn't often choose just anyone for her ensemble casts.
In 2016 Son Ye-ha appeared in The Handmaiden in a role that barely scratched the surface of the script but helped reveal her physical magnetism. There were no major headlines or trending magazine covers after the premiere in Cannes. Still, that shoot was the accelerated masterclass she needed to realize her place was both in front of and behind the camera. Before that moment, she was just another student at the Korean National University of Arts, eager to observe.
It was a quiet learning process.
Her move into directing was no whim from an actress bored of waiting for phone calls. In 2020, she premiered The Girl Who Runs and made it clear that her vision has little in common with the empty aestheticism that abounds in certain Seoul circles. She shot on a tight budget with a narrative that leans on silences rather than explanatory dialogue. Because Son Ye-ha is interested in what happens when characters think no one is watching.
She got local critics to focus on her ability to do without technical artifice in favor of an almost uncomfortable honesty. The film didn't aim to please international festivals (although it ended up traveling to several) but rather to portray a very specific urban loneliness. And the gamble paid off.
Many expected that after that debut, she would pursue projects with greater commercial scale. But in 2022, she chose to return to pure acting, taking roles in independent productions where the paycheck was the least of her concerns. So she stepped away from the spotlight to work on stories that others considered too small or too risky.
She lives a deliberately low-profile life.
She doesn't attend social events or use social media to promote her private life. This distance from the public has created a mystique that she herself makes a point of breaking every time she steps onto a set. On the set of A Resistance in 2019, she already showed that her commitment to the story comes before her own image. She worked for weeks in extreme cold without a single technical complaint.
Her creative process begins with an obsessive reading of the original texts. Before shooting, she studies every line until she finds the crack where emotion can seep in. In 2023, she focused on writing her next original screenplay while turning down three series offers from global streaming platforms. For her, time is the most valuable asset of her career, and she has no intention of wasting it on quick-consumption products.
In 2024, she wrapped pre-production on her second feature film as a director, with a crew that was 80% women. Filming was scheduled to last exactly 42 days on locations in Gyeonggi Province, with a final budget of 1,200 million won.
