Her Baptism with Brando

Stephanie Beacham was born with total deafness in her right ear. Doctors told her parents that the girl would hardly ever speak normally. But Beacham not only learned to speak, she went on to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London after taking mime classes with Marcel Marceau in Paris.

In 1971 her luck changed when she was cast in The Nightcomers. She shared the bill with Marlon Brando in a prequel to Henry James’s work that is now studied as a curious piece of its era. Brando used to hide his lines behind the set’s vases so he wouldn’t have to memorize anything.

Brando chose her personally.

Her years at the Hammer studio typecast her in low-budget gothic horror. She appeared in Dracula A.D. 1972 alongside Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. But she wanted more than screaming in front of a coffin on cold London soundstages.

The Shoulder Pad Wars

American television called on her in 1985 to bring Sable Colby to life. The character was created as the necessary antagonist in The Colbys and ended up jumping over to the main series, Dynasty. Her on-screen rivalry with Joan Collins was a mass-market product that generated millions of dollars in advertising every week.

And the gamble paid off.

Despite the luxury she projected on screen, Beacham always kept her feet on the ground. In 1989, the series ended and she returned to the UK to work on less glamorous but more demanding projects. The passage of time did not pull her out of the spotlight, because she knew how to adapt to the fast-paced rhythm of British television.

In 2003 she joined the cast of Bad Girls, playing an inmate in a women’s prison. It was a necessary change of pace to move away from the image of a wealthy Californian that the industry had imposed on her. But British audiences will always remember her for her debut on the legendary Coronation Street.

The Serial Refuge

She first played Martha Fraser in 2009. Her character lived on a barge and brought a breath of fresh air to the main storyline. In 2022 the actress decided to reprise this same role for a new batch of episodes that aired during the winter of that year.

Money was never the main motivator.

During 2023, Beacham took part in several commemorative events about classic horror films in London. Her contract for her last television appearances specified a shooting schedule that did not exceed eight hours a day at the Manchester studios.

Filming her final scenes on the Weatherfield set wrapped on a November Tuesday under persistent rain.
