The story of the Battle of Iwo Jima told through the eyes of Japanese soldiers.

In 2005, Japanese archaeologists explore the tunnels of Iwo Jima, a Pacific island where one of the bloodiest battles of World War II was fought. Underground, the team finds something buried in the ground and begins to reconstruct the island's past from that discovery. The excavation brings them face to face with a place that still holds the memory of the soldiers who defended it. Clint Eastwood directs the film, shot almost entirely in Japanese, and Ken Watanabe and Kazunari Ninomiya lead the cast. The movie takes the Japanese perspective, and the story unfolds through the island's underground tunnels.

Trivia about Letters from Iwo Jima

Although the story takes place in Japan, the film was shot mainly in Barstow and Bakersfield, California.
To shoot on Iwo Jima, the filmmakers needed a special permit from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, because the remains of more than 10,000 missing Japanese soldiers still lie there.
Charles W. Lindberg, played by Alessandro Mastrobuono, is the only character who appears in both Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima.
Despite good reviews, the movie made only US$13.7 million at the box office in the United States.
