Synopsis of Tokyo Vice

Tokyo, 1999. Jake Adelstein, an American journalist eager to dig into investigative reporting, arrives in the city and lands a job at a major Japanese newspaper, where he becomes its first foreign reporter. His mentor is Hiroto Katagiri, a veteran detective in the organized crime unit who opens the door to a dark and dangerous world: the yakuza. Jake wants to uncover what lies behind the facade of a city that, according to the official line defended by the police and the newspaper, has no murders. Meanwhile, Samantha Porter, an American expatriate who works as a hostess in the Kabukicho district, serves working-class, high-end and yakuza clients.

Trivia about Tokyo Vice

The idea began as a feature film in 2013, with Daniel Radcliffe set to star as Adelstein.
The series was filmed almost entirely in Japan, which is unusual for Western productions, which typically shoot only establishing shots there and move most of the filming to Los Angeles, Vancouver or Wellington.
Filming in Tokyo was halted in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and resumed in November of that year.
The second season earned a 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, according to the site's own figures.
Max canceled the series on June 8, 2024, after two seasons.
Masanori Aikawa, the series' location manager, earned her a Location Managers Guild nomination in 2024.
The character of Emi Maruyama is a composite of several colleagues and supervisors who worked with the real Adelstein.
During filming of the second season, the crew managed to shut down one of Akasaka's busiest nightlife streets in Tokyo for a single night to shoot a scene.
