No rules or restrictions when Popeye lets loose!

New York, Brooklyn. Detective Jimmy Doyle, a sharp-nosed cop, follows the trail of a drug trafficking ring. He suspects that a candy store in the neighborhood is part of the operation and convinces his boss to wiretap the shop's phone line. Together with his partner Buddy Rosso, Doyle and his men keep watch on everyone who goes in and out. Soon, the candy store owner becomes the key piece, and his trail leads to two Frenchmen who have just arrived in the United States. Directed by William Friedkin and starring Gene Hackman.

Trivia about The French Connection

On April 26, 1968, a record amount of heroin was seized: 246 pounds, about 111.6 kilos, hidden in a Citroën DS that traveled to New York aboard the transatlantic liner SS France.
Fernando Rey landed his role through a case of mistaken identity. Friedkin had been impressed by Francisco Rabal in Buñuel's Belle de Jour, but he couldn't remember his name, so the casting director contacted Rey instead.
Friedkin initially opposed Gene Hackman and considered names like Paul Newman, who was ruled out because of his salary, or columnist Jimmy Breslin, who had never acted before. Breslin refused to drive a car.
According to cinematographer Owen Roizman, the camera was shot at 18 frames per second to heighten the sense of speed in the car chase.

Quotes by The French Connection

  • All right, Popeye's here! Get your hands on your heads, get off the bar, and get on the wall!
  • All right! You put a shiv in my partner. You know what that means? Goddammit! All winter long I got to listen to him gripe about his bowling scores. Now I'm gonna bust your ass for those three bags and I'm gonna nail you for picking your feet in Poughkeepsie.
