Edina Monsoon runs a struggling public relations agency in Holland Park, London. Her best friend, Patsy Stone, is a former model who holds an undemanding job at a major magazine and lives off Edina. The two spend much of their money on alcohol, cigarettes and drugs while chasing trends to look young and relive their glory days. This lifestyle triggers constant crises, and it's almost always Saffron, Edina's daughter, who bails them out. The conflicts range from drinking, which drives Edina to rock bottom, to her weight and her distress at turning forty. Patsy and Edina also end up stranded at a country house in Provence, unable to speak French, with no food and with a strange visitor.

Meanwhile, her practical teenage daughter, Saffron—whom Edina had promised to quit drinking—constantly reprehends her mother's unhealthy habits. Edina's enabling best friend, Patricia 'Patsy' Stone, arrives to accompany her to work. At the office, Edina's hopelessly dimwitted personal assistant Bubble reports that one of the main models has dropped out.
