Synopsis of Squid Game: The Challenge

Netflix brings the universe of Squid Game to the reality TV format. In this British show, 456 contestants face a series of challenges designed to test their skills. All of them are competing for the same prize: 4.56 million dollars. The challenges unfold in a competition setting where each player must prove their endurance, strategy, and ability to keep going. The series is a race for the reward, in which the number of players dwindles as the games progress and the pressure builds. It's a competition that borrows the rules of the South Korean fiction and transplants them into a real setting, with flesh-and-blood contestants competing for the huge sum.

Trivia about Squid Game: The Challenge

Netflix recruited contestants from around the world but required them to speak English, and about 81,000 people applied to take part in the casting.

Filming began in January 2023 at Cardington Studios in Bedford and on six giant sound stages in Barking, London.

Several players claimed the "Red Light, Green Light" challenge actually lasted 7 hours, and Netflix denied that the reported injuries were serious.

For two weeks the show ranked No. 1 on Netflix's list of the top 10 English-language shows, and it added 20.5 million views in its first week.

The reality show also pushed the original Squid Game up to No. 7 on the non-English TV list, with 1.5 million views in the show's premiere week.

The Hollywood Reporter called the series a "brand extension that fundamentally misunderstands what the brand was supposed to represent in the first place."

Netflix announced the second season on December 6, 2023, before the first season's finale had even aired.

The series won the 2024 BAFTA TV Award for Best Reality Programme and also took home the 2024 Rose d'Or in the competition reality category.
