Adèle Haenel didn't ask for permission to enter French cinema. In 2002, she first appeared on screen in Les Diables, and even then her gaze conveyed a restrained violence that few child actors know how to handle. She was twelve years old. Christophe Ruggia's film was the beginning of everything, but also the origin of a trauma that would take nearly two decades to put into words.
Her career didn't follow the usual path of Paris's young stars. After that debut, she disappeared from the spotlight to finish her studies and returned in 2007 with Naissance des pieuvres. It was her first professional collaboration with director Céline Sciamma. French cinema quickly realized Haenel didn't fit the mold of the ethereal muse, because her physical presence was too bold, almost aggressive.
And the audience connected with that roughness.
In 2014, she won her first César Award for Suzanne. Just one year later, she returned to the stage to accept another statuette for her role in The Fighters. She became the first woman to win two Academy Awards in France in different categories in consecutive years. Yet the awards never seemed to soften her disdain for the traditional hierarchies of the film set.
Her definitive international breakthrough came in 2019 with Portrait of a Lady on Fire. In this film, she played Héloïse, an aristocrat who refuses to be painted for a forced marriage. The film was a global critical success, but while the world applauded her talent, Haenel was quietly preparing a definitive break with the system around her.
In November 2019, she broke her silence in an interview with Mediapart. She accused Christophe Ruggia of sexual harassment and inappropriate touching when she was a minor. She did not do so to seek financial compensation, but to expose a system of power that shielded abusers in the French film industry. Her testimony became the driving force behind the MeToo movement in France.
But the moment that defined her public image happened in February 2020.
During the César Awards ceremony, when Roman Polanski was announced as Best Director, Haenel stood up from her seat and walked out of the hall, shouting, “Shame!” That image of the actress leaving the auditorium in her evening gown with her fist raised went around the world. It was her last night as part of the official machinery of French commercial cinema.
From that moment on, her appearances in mainstream films came to an abrupt halt. In May 2023, she published an open letter in the magazine Télérama announcing her decision to leave cinema for good. In the text, she described the film industry as reactionary, racist and patriarchal. Haenel decided she did not want to lend her face to whitewash a system she considered rotten.
Many thought her career was over, but she simply changed stages. She found refuge in avant-garde theater and in a close collaboration with choreographer Gisèle Vienne. In 2021, they premiered the play L’Étang, a dark, technical piece in which Haenel explores the limits of voice and body without the mediation of a film camera.
And she has no regrets.
Her activism moved to the streets and to workers' assemblies. In 2023, she was seen at several protests in Paris against pension reform and taking part in events organized by the railway union. Haenel traded red carpet premieres for active political activism and small-scale experimental theater.
In 2024, her professional activity focused exclusively on the European tour of the play Extra Life. This theater production demands grueling physical effort and lacks any financial backing from the major film studios that once fought over her name. The actress lives in Paris and has no official social media profiles. Her most recent feature film role remains the shoot for 2019.
