The Legacy of the Three Sisters

Clotilde Hesme is not the only actress in her family. Her sisters Anamaria and Elodie were already working in the French industry when she decided to enroll at the Conservatoire National Supérieur d'Art Dramatique in Paris. She is a tall woman with sharp features and a presence that seems made for classical theater, yet the camera captures it with a strange naturalness.

Her first big break in film came in 2005 with Les Amants réguliers. Director Philippe Garrel chose her to star in this black-and-white portrait of the aftermath of May '68 in France. That film was her calling card in an industry that tends to demand youth and submission, two things Hesme has never fully been willing to negotiate.

And then Christophe Honoré appeared.

In 2007, the release of Les Chansons d'amour changed its international reach. That melancholy musical, set against the streets of Paris, made her the face of a new generation of French performers. Hesme doesn't sing like a professional, but her voice has a fragility that fits the tone of the film perfectly. She prefers raw emotion over perfect technique.

Recognition and the Rise of Television

The French film industry gave her the César for Most Promising Actress in 2012 for her role in Angèle et Tony. In the film, she plays a woman who gets out of prison and seeks stability in a small coastal town in Normandy. She landed the role after a audition of barely ten minutes in which she convinced the director that her gaze was enough to carry the entire drama.

Before shooting, she reads the script looking for the silences more than the dialogue.

That same year, 2012 marked her move into quality television with Les Revenants. The series, about deceased people who return to their hometown without having aged, was a critical hit across much of the world. Her performance as Adèle allowed her to explore a darker, more restrained register than in her earlier work. Her face soon became a regular fixture on streaming platforms, long before they came to dominate the market.

But her major global breakthrough came in 2021 with Lupin. In the Netflix production, she plays Juliette Pellegrini and shares the spotlight with Omar Sy. The series drew more than 70 million viewers in its first weeks on air. Hesme brings an aristocratic elegance that offsets the character's constant energy.

The stage remains her refuge.

Maturity and Control of Her Career

Despite the money from big international productions, she has never abandoned independent film. In 2023, she took part in the drama L'Établi, which portrays the workers' struggle after the events of 68. It is a return to her thematic roots, but with the experience of someone who already knows every trick of the trade. Hesme, however, shies away from artifice and often asks for less makeup than the lighting crew suggests.

In 2024, she premiered Le Roman de Jim, directed by the Larrieu brothers, and had a prominent role in L'Amour ouf by Gilles Lellouche. The latter film competed in the official selection at the Cannes Film Festival. The actress lives in Paris and chooses her projects based on the quality of the script, not the budget allotted to her personal trailer.

Commercial success doesn't scare her.

Her contract for her latest large-scale productions includes a specific availability clause for theater rehearsals in Avignon. Production costs for her smaller projects in 2024 stayed below three million euros per film. Filming for her next collaboration with French public television was scheduled to last exactly six weeks on locations in the Alps.
