On 2012 Omar Sy took the stage at the Théâtre du Châtelet to accept the César for Best Actor. He beat Jean Dujardin, who had just won the Oscar for The Artist. That moment shattered the glass ceiling of French cinema for a kid raised in the social housing projects of Trappes.
His parents moved to France from Senegal and Mauritania to work as cleaners and in factories. Sy was the fourth of eight siblings and never planned to become an actor. Before he gained national fame, he worked at Radio Nova, where he met Fred Testot.
The comedy duo Omar et Fred ran for years on television with the show Service après-vente des émissions. But Sy wanted more than the quick three-minute gag in front of the camera. He wanted real cinema.
In 2011 The Intouchables premiered. The film drew 19 million moviegoers in France alone and became an unprecedented global phenomenon for a non-English-language production.
That was no accident.
Sy moved to Los Angeles with his family to learn English and find a place in major productions. He appeared in X-Men: Days of Future Past in 2014 and in Jurassic World during 2015. They were supporting roles, cogs in a bigger machine that taught him how the industry worked from the inside.
And the industry responded.
His real international breakthrough beyond physical comedy came in 2021 with Lupin. Netflix reported that 70 million households watched the series in its first four weeks. Sy played Assane Diop, a white-collar thief who used charm as his main weapon in a Paris that rarely gave the lead role to someone with his background.
In 2022, he produced and starred in Tirailleurs. The film tells the story of Senegalese soldiers during World War I and sold more than one million tickets in the French market. It was a personal project that he financed through his own company to keep control of the film's political message.
In 2024, he co-founded Carrousel Studios with Louis Leterrier and Thomas Benski. The company aims to produce films and series with an international outlook, with offices in Paris, London and Los Angeles. Sy no longer waits for the phone to ring, because now he's the one signing the contracts.
That same year, he served on the official jury of the Cannes Film Festival under the presidency of Greta Gerwig.
In August 2024, he premiered the remake of The Killer under the direction of John Woo. The shoot took place entirely in Paris, with an estimated budget of 30 million dollars.
