Before climbing the stairs to collect the Palme d'Or for Best Actress at the Grand Théâtre Lumière in Cannes, Adriana Paz was earning a living serving coffee at a bar in Tarragona. That stay in Catalonia in the early 2000s had no glamour or red carpets. She had finished a degree in Dramatic Literature at UNAM in Mexico and needed to pay for contemporary dance classes.
Nobody handed her a single shot.
Her career was built from tiny supporting roles in her home country. She had brief appearances in Rudo y Cursi in 2008 and in the stark El traspatio in 2009. Independent directors quickly noticed an uncomfortable truth in her gaze. Paz did not portray social drama from a bourgeois distance; she embodied it with a dryness that disarmed the camera.
Mexican cinema has an unwritten rule: critical acclaim rarely puts food on the table. Paz defied that inertia by winning three consecutive Ariel Awards between 2015 and 2017. She won Best Actress for La tirisia and followed it with two supporting actress awards for Hilda and La caridad. That made her the first consecutive triple win in the history of the Mexican Academy, unprecedented.
She shot La tirisia while pregnant with her son without knowing it yet. She endured brutal temperatures in the Tehuacán desert while building Cheba, a woman trapped by rural neglect. The physical effort was grueling.
But recognition in Mexico did not guarantee contracts abroad.
Manuel Martín Cuenca cast her in 2017 to co-star in The Author alongside Javier Gutiérrez. She played a gossipy concierge and an unwitting victim of an unscrupulous writer. That role earned her a Goya nomination for Best New Actress at the 2018 ceremony. Shortly after, she joined the cast of Cruz del Norte for the third and fourth seasons of Vis a Vis. As Altagracia Guerrero, a relentless prison officer broken inside, she reached thousands of Spanish TV screens without asking permission.
French director Jacques Audiard spent months putting together the cast of his narco-musical Emilia Pérez. He wanted familiar Hollywood faces, but needed a Mexican presence that could carry the weight of the story on screen. He cast Paz as Epifanía, the woman who connects the protagonist's personal redemption with the reality of clandestine graves.
In May 2024, the Cannes Film Festival jury presided over by Greta Gerwig made an unusual decision. It gave the Best Actress award to the entire choral cast of the film. Adriana Paz became the first woman from Mexico to win the Best Actress prize at Cannes.
And the gamble paid off.
Rather than settling into safe projects, she quickly returned to low-budget productions in her homeland. In 2024, she starred in Dead Man's Ring under the direction of Alejandro Gerber Bicecci. She played Dalia, a Mexico City metro operator searching for her missing husband through a maze of bureaucracy and police silence. For this role, she earned her fifth Ariel nomination at the 2025 ceremony.
That same year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences invited her to join its actors branch. Her schedule wrapped with the shoot of La Cazadora, directed by Suzanne Andrews Correa, an independent drama filmed entirely in Ciudad Juárez on a budget of two million dollars.
