In 2010, Alex O'Loughlin's life changed with a long-term contract that would tie him to a Pacific island. He had experience in failed series and films that quietly slipped past the Australian box office. But American television was looking for a face capable of carrying the weight of a legendary franchise.
Before the beaches of Hawaii, he worked on Oyster Farmer for 2004. The independent film showcased an actor who handled silence and physical presence well. It also helped catch the attention of casting directors in Los Angeles.
It wasn't all smooth sailing.
In 2007 he tried to break into fantasy with Moonlight. He played a vampire detective who won over a very vocal group of fans, but the show was canceled after just one season. It was a hard blow for an actor who was already nearing thirty and needed a steady paycheck.
O'Loughlin auditioned to be the next James Bond before Daniel Craig landed the role for Casino Royale. He was left just short of worldwide stardom and had to make his way through smaller-scale projects. So he accepted supporting roles in prestige series such as The Shield to learn how the industry really worked from the inside.
In 2010, he starred alongside Jennifer Lopez in The Back-up Plan. Critics were merciless about the couple's on-screen chemistry. But the film grossed more than $77 million worldwide and gave him the push he needed to lead his own television project.
The premiere of Hawaii Five-0 in September 2010 gave him the financial security he was looking for. He played Steve McGarrett for ten years straight and filmed a total of 240 episodes.
The price of fame was chronic pain.
The shoot was extremely demanding on his body because he performed many of his own action scenes. He suffered serious back and shoulder injuries that led him to undergo stem cell treatments for 2012. That period shaped his character and made him much more selective about his physical efforts.
During the final seasons of the series in 2018 and 2019, he became interested in what was happening behind the cameras. He directed several episodes and helped write some scripts to better understand the technical mechanics of fiction. He knew his run as an action hero had an expiration date coming soon.
When the series ended in April 2020, the actor decided to step away from the spotlight completely. He settled permanently in Hawaii with his family and focused on his passion for Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
The industry stopped being his top priority.
In 2024, his official credits still show no new acting projects on the big screen. The syndication deal for his main series keeps generating residual income while he keeps a low profile, far from the California studios. His last notable public appearance was at a martial arts technical seminar.
