Alexander Godunov landed in New York in August 1979 with the Bolshoi and decided he would not board the flight back to the USSR. He was twenty-nine years old. That move sparked a three-day diplomatic crisis, with his wife held on the tarmac at JFK airport while Carter and Brezhnev negotiated his fate.
He sought freedom but found a wall of expectations that his Nordic demigod physique could not always withstand. His blond mane and his 1.90 meters of height made him too striking to go unnoticed on a stage or on a movie set.
He was no ordinary dancer.
In his early years in the United States, he worked with American Ballet Theatre under Mikhail Baryshnikov. But their relationship ended in an abrupt firing in 1982. That break pushed him firmly into the spotlight of Los Angeles, since he no longer had a stage to showcase his classical technique.
Peter Weir gave him his first major break in Witness in 1985. He played Daniel Hochleitner, an Amish farmer who competes with Harrison Ford for the lead character's love. He made audiences forget his Russian accent thanks to an imposing yet restrained physical presence.
Then came Karl.
In 1988, he appeared in Die Hard and brought to life one of the most memorable villains of late-century action cinema. His portrayal of the terrorist driven by a thirst for revenge for his brother's death defined an archetype of cold, athletic antagonist. He earned a fraction of what Bruce Willis did, yet his face ended up on every poster for the film.
But Hollywood is an industry that devours overly specific profiles. After the success of John McTiernan's film, the scripts landing on his desk only asked for watered-down versions of that blond killer. He appeared in the comedy The Money Pit in 1986 alongside Tom Hanks, proving he had a real sense of comic timing.
And the gamble never happened again.
His personal life was marked by an on-and-off relationship with actress Jacqueline Bisset that lasted nearly seven years. He never fully fit into California's social circles, preferring solitude or the company of a very small group of close friends.
In 1995, his body was found lifeless in his apartment at Shoreham Towers. He had been dead for several days. The autopsy determined that complications from chronic hepatitis and alcoholism took his life at the age of forty-five.
The spark faded without witnesses.
His ashes were scattered in the Pacific Ocean at his family's express wish. His belongings were auctioned off months later, and his name became forever linked to that strange breed of artists who crossed the Iron Curtain only to be consumed by the American dream. His bank account barely exceeded one million dollars at the time of his death.
